No, she won't use it for a couple more months. The price was right and she assumed 'Samsonite' was a good name. Like you, she got the 22" size. I haven't actually seen or handled the bag myself.
Honestly, if you're pretty sure you won't have to check it or haul it over curbs and cobblestones, I think you'll be fine. If my friend has any issues with her bag, I will post back here.
