It is hard to argue that they shouldn't increase the price, given the crowds.

Perhaps one of the motivations is to encourage more people to switch to the card. If half of the people that are unwilling to pay the new fee drop their membership, and the other half switch to the credit card, then that's doubly good: reduced membership to reduce crowding, more fees from members that stay, and more credit card members. I suspect that the people that have the $395 credit card are more valuable to United on average than the $155 "lost" on the regular club member fees.
