UA is always going to
have some passengers due to having fortress hubs - I don't think anyone is disputing that. Those are the FFs I truly feel sorry for, because UA continues to abuse them.

Even for people for whom $12,000 for a plane ticket is trivial (and I was in this category before leaving UA), these changes are unwelcome because it continues UA's trend of continuing to abuse FF's and devalue the product. It's more than just a single devaluation - it shows the mentality of management.
