Flying through a typhoon is not a problem. Landing in one is. If the typhoon comes directly at NRT, there is probably a 2 or 3 hour gap when they can't land. Easy to circle or divert to NGO.
I had a flight (BA 744) where they tried to land in the eye of the typhoon. The 2 flights before ours got in, but we got waved off about 50 feet off the runway.
To circle or diverted? 50 feet, eh? Must have been quite interesting. Had that happen once in Phoenix when the pilot noticed another plane still on the runway. Yikes!
