I'm confused why this issue has anything to do with 016 stock or UA issued tickets or not. Sounds like you were simply being held to the fare rules of the ticket you bought. That's why I always read the change/cancel rules before I buy a ticket with anyone. Don't want a flight thus doesn't meet needs.

Haven't had a situation yet where I've had to make a decision on buying a completely non-cancelable ticket yet (even with a fee) but that's something I'm just not comfortable with, unless the discount is so great that it's worth a throw away. Even if I'm not expecting it, you never know. I know SQ has those kind of fares.
