Yep. When AA was in bankruptcy, AA renegotiated the contract to permit AA to take up to 20 787-8s as a part of the 42 firm orders.
IIRC it was due to Boeing's severely delayed delivery schedule for the 789s AA had ordered -- for delivery starting in 2012.
