And yes, I would guess that most people are aware that both programs can be applied to a single reservation since you are allowed to enter both numbers on any reservation. It's not as complex as you would imply it to be.
A lot of people do not know the difference, and are not aware that both can and should be used whenever possible. Even for those who do know the difference, it is often hard to tell, because so many people use some variation of the terms "code number" or "coupon number" or "discount code" or "rate code," etc.
