That someone does not need the upgrade/suite, etc. doesn't enter the conversation. It's a game, it's a weird validation that "I won and you didn't," it's beating somebody else (other traveler or hotel, it matters not).
100% right on. I am like the OP and find holiday inn express perfectly suitable. Bed, breakfast, shower and Internet. I don't need anything more in a hotel.
