What you were told doesn't make any sense. Of course this is not how it will be forever. And, in fact, it isn't how it is for most people right now.
I flew LAX-JFK on 3/16 and my miles were posted within a couple of days. And I flew JFK-LAX on 3/2 (the day before the merged systems) and those miles also posted within a couple of days.
Also, the miles from my Chase United Visa card from my 3/21 statement posted a day or two later.
