Passports can be amended for free if the passport was issued within a year of the name change. Having the passport amended is also a hassle. I was questioned a lot after I had my passport amended and booked in my married name. I always had to travel with my marriage license too and was pulled for secondary screening quite a bit.

It was quite the relief when my passport was expiring and I needed to renew.
