so if you had a Verizon phone that is not going to work in Europe since its not GSM , will the GPS work as long as I download maps before I leave or over WiFi ?

thanks RB
Redondo- For my last trip to Europe, my unlocked Nokia E71 north american version worked beautifully with the maps loaded prior to the trip WITHOUT any data plan prior to or during the trip. The E71 is a quad band phone (no CDMA) that worked very well for navigation as well as round the world phone calls with Gizmo (now part of Google Voice) VOIP phone calls using WiFi - calls cost about the 2 cents a minute which is way cheaper than AT&T, etc. For emergencies, I bought a Lebara (sp?) SIM card in Switzerland for about $10. With the WiFi connection, I was also able to surf the 'net, do e-mails, check flights, weather, etc. So, I needed only one phone to do it all - no need to lug a lap top or a separate GPS around.
