The key words in one post were "I guess, I'd have to buy some stuff using their AA number?" Others have addressed the creation of phantom accounts.
All I can say is the AAdvantage Audits folks do read these threads - they can't stop one from various and sundry schemes that violate the T&Cs, but they
can - they are pretty savvy folks - catch one later.
I'm not attempting to moralize here, only posting the obvious - TANSTAAFL.
(And it nearly goes without mention if a post encourages or advocates doing something blatantly against AAdvantage T&Cs or the law, it will 1) be summarily deleted, and 2) depending on the nature of the post, the poster would also be subject to discipline in accordance with the
FlyerTalk Rules.)

The rules read, "referred friends", then parents appear to qualify. Must be, "new members" and only spending money is OK.
So, perfectly "legal" as far as I can see.
But, your point is true, a person might only have a "few" parents (joined families).
I'm guessing using the "spending money" part, the new AA member must make a purchase using a credit card with their name on it.
Bottom line: Too much work for only 1k.
