Agreed - my tactic: just dump a pile of your stuff there. If its a two seater - sit C so as to obstruct access to A (or sit in H and obstruct K). I don't see anything wrong with telling the crew - but usually I'd find the ISM as the junior crew dont seem want to get involved (or feign ignorance).
It becomes tricky when you have a row of 4 blocked. In that case, I'd sit in E and make a mess with F G so to 'mark your territory' so to say!
I dont see why SLs cant ask for block seats - provided that you ask early enough and the flight isnt critical there shouldnt be a problem!
