Depends on the city. FOr a one day flight place very low, for Something like, AMS/ CDG they have flights every two or three hours so it is not to bad.
For comparison's sake, AF offered a non-negotiable 300 euros to take the next flight CDG-JFK (which was the next morning). 300 euros is about $450, so the compensation seems roughly equal, with it favoring one or the other slightly, depending on the circumstances.
