The three things I remember about flying thru Kansas City on Eastern:
1) Their unique (to me) terminal. Cars could drop off passengers, as I recall, right in front of a departure gate, that is, you got out of the car, walked 30 feet and you were at your departure gate with the aircraft just outside.
2) This made the terminal very long and narrow and somewhat, but not inordinately, crowded.
3) It was the only time I put my then completely mobile and completely irresponsible two year old on a child leash so he could walk and burn off some energy on the ground without getting lost.
MCI is still like that, except it's a disaster with modern security requirements. Sure, the walk from being dropped off to the ticket counter, to the gate is very short. But it also means a lack of restrooms, food, and shopping behind security, security checkpoints at nearly every gate, or every cluster of 2-3 gates, and the possible need to reclear security if connecting.
