Spelling things as "-mp-" is traditional Hepburn (Nihommatsu, Gumma, Asahi Shimbun, etc), while "-np-" is revised Hepburn (Nihonmatsu, Gunma, Asahi Shinbun).
I know "The Asahi" will be surprised by this....
