I wonder if they're watching the competition? Choice used to also have hard expiration, but they got rid of it about a year ago. That leaves WyndhamRewards as the sole hotel points program with a hard expiration AFAIK.
So I'm hoping the "how long it will last" will apply to the hard expiration overall, not just to the "one time" exception.
