Well, I have no idea whether UA has other internal business practices or unpublished rules which create a stricter definition of a "valid international connection" or "stopover" than what's in the contract of carriage. There is plenty of anecdata here indicating that UA seems to enforce stricter rules than they have written down.

I wonder, though, if a demand to talk to the rate desk and a reference to the COC would produce a different result.

After all, the COC is pretty controlling for most purposes.

I may be making a lot more long "layovers" in the future!

Could be Ive been Wrong all along, but I thought a person had to land say @ LAX after the last flight to OGG left .And then be booked for the 1st flight out the next day and not the 1st available flight the next day.

Depending where a person is heading that could mean arriving @ LAX close to Midnight and having their next flight a few hrs later

Mods: Could we maybe break this out into a separate discussion on the first-available-flight rule? I think it could be a very useful conversation to have.

Saver fare from NYC to connect to LAX-OGG

OP here. I just booked a dummy return so I could make .bomb happy with an overnight in LA. I too have gotten very inconsistent responses in the past to laying over on the way to HI, even on last flight.
