Well, I have no idea whether UA has other internal business practices or unpublished rules which create a stricter definition of a "valid international connection" or "stopover" than what's in the contract of carriage. There is plenty of anecdata here indicating that UA seems to enforce stricter rules than they have written down.

After all, the COC is pretty controlling for most purposes.

Thanks for this. I thought I was right, but I didn't know that things were so clear. I wish I had known this before, because I would have called and requested a second opinion from the rate desk on my recent MR.
I may be making a lot more long "layovers" in the future!
Do we think that "the first flight on which space is available" is the first flight with Y space, or with appropriate fare bucket space? (Okay, maybe that's getting a bit greedy.)

Depending where a person is heading that could mean arriving @ LAX close to Midnight and having their next flight a few hrs later

OP here. I just booked a dummy return so I could make .bomb happy with an overnight in LA. I too have gotten very inconsistent responses in the past to laying over on the way to HI, even on last flight.
