This is new website functionality -- avoids the extra step of having to manually apply the GPU.
Actually is new.
In the past you could only search and auto-upgrade with miles, now can be done with GPUs. Of course the old school manual method of applying GPU after bookings still works.

I just booked a flight to NRT for my wife and I.
I did the searches from the hubs to NRT because there was zero R avail. from my outstation. I found hub to NRT R space and booked my wife's ticket first using the upgrade function. After booking, I waited until the flight ticketed and then went back into her account to select her hub to NRT seat in BF. I was unable to do it and called the 1K desk. They told me that I would have to wait until the system sweep was complete which could take up to 24 hours. Since there was R9, I didn't worry and set about booking my ticket.
I booked mine the old way, just buying a W-fare without the new upgrade function and waited until it ticketed. I went into my account and applied the GPUs and got the upgrade instantaneously.
My wife didn't get her upgrade until approx. 18 hours later.

Yes, I was actually happy they switched planes and delayed the flight 3 hours because I was #1 on the upgrade list when the door shut the first time and, thanks to FT, know that opportunity lurks behind every United irrop!
