i've wanted to start a thread about sponsorship of sports teams for a while, but i'll just post in here.

if you google 'yankees official airline', the first result is [still] for CO. to the best of my knowledge, the only currently UA sponsored team in the NYC area are the football giants.

i have some expertise in apparel sponsorship of athletes/teams, but none with regards to more ancillary sponsorship like airlines. apparel sponsorships are generally poor investments (for those interested, @mattSOS on twitter provides fantastic daily insight/analysis).

i'm guessing this is a poor investment by UA, but seen by WHQ as a 'necessary' move to defend the fortress hub.

San Francisco is not a fortress hub - less than 50% of the traffic (UA) keeps SFO somewhat competitive (unlike IAH, EWR, ATL, DFW)

Funny also that SJC is 7 miles from Levi, while SFO is 32 miles away.

Regarding your real question - The halo effect of being associated with the 9ers? How much value do you get from that?

It does not make sense to me, but neither does most marketing.

United is the official airline of eight Major League Baseball teams -- including those in its Chicago, Houston, and Washington hub cities -- and flies a total of 12 MLB teams to and from away games throughout the season. United is the official airline of the following teams and flies them to and from away games throughout the MLB season:

• Chicago Cubs • Kansas City Royals
• Chicago White Sox • Miami Marlins
• Cleveland Indians • San Diego Padres
• Houston Astros • Washington Nationals
I believe, DL is still the official airline for the LA Dodgers and Lakers.

I wonder if they will fly the team from SJC or SFO?

Years ago, because my company did some sponsorship of the 49ers, I got invited on the team away game on the team plane. Back part of the plane was 'players only'. No alcohol on the airplane at all. One of the radio guys told me that they had the same flight crew / flight attendant crew every flight.

Arrived to team buses on the tarmac and police escort into the team hotel. Quite the experience.

The 49ers have trained in Santa Clara for years. I don't see the stadium move affecting their airport choice at all.

Smile Largest United Club in the world will be opening in August

The newest and largest United Club in the world was announced yesterday. Scheduled to open in August, the 44,000-square foot space will be able to host 3,300 guests.

The one catch? It won't be located at any airport but in Santa Clara, California at the new home of the San Francisco 49ers, Levi's®.Stadium!

“The Santa Clara Stadium Authority and San Francisco 49ers announced today that United Airlines will be the exclusive domestic and international commercial airline partner of the San Francisco 49ers and Levi’s® Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.

As part of a 10-year agreement, United Airlines will present an exclusive club located on the 300-level of the suite tower designed to accommodate over 3,300 ticketed guests for 49ers games, special public events and private catered events. At 44,000-square feet, the United Club is the largest club space in Levi’s® Stadium.”

SJC is less than a 10-minute drive from their training facilities and new stadium.

In fact the main flight path for fair-weather takeoffs from SJC goes right over Levi's® Stadium.

(During storms, the wind is usually from the south, so in bad weather the flight path for landing at SJC will be over the stadium.)

SJC does have a midnight curfew for jet flights landing (or taking off) from the airport, so 49ers charter flights arriving past midnight in the Bay Area would need to land at either SFO or OAK.

(Unless the 49ers want to pay a fine like Oracle's Larry Ellison usually does.)

Does this mean that UA will stick around SJC for a while? resurrect the SJC-ORD flights?

Where exactly is the San Jose-Santa Clara city border? Is it right down the middle of the SJC runway? or on the west fence adjacent to it?

Does a United Club membership/*A gold status, get you into the Levi's stadium United Club with/without a boarding pass?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 7_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/537.51.2 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/7.0 Mobile/11D167 Safari/9537.53)

It'll be interesting to see what happens with the scoreboard sign at Progressive Field (CLE) and Waveland Ave rooftop sign at Wrigley.

With the landmarks committee giving the final go-ahead on Wrigley renovations, that roof will soon not have any exposure on broadcasts. Maybe UA buys real estate on on of the new video boards.

There was an article in the Denver Post during the playoffs about the Broncos charters. Same crews all season long as they know the players and the service levels. No carts used on the charters either to prevent injuries.

If you follow some of the White Sox charters they fly into airports which they choose. This is why Chicago Midway, Burke Lakefront, St Petersburg, Kansas City Downtown, Boeing Field, and Oakland County/Pontiac is included on their destination list.

When the Broncos fly in to play the Raiders they do so to SJC as it is close to the team hotel and I believe depart from OAK right after the game.

So has anyone been successful in gaining access to the United Club at the stadium using their United Club Membership Card (when not having a ticket to a club seat)?

Regarding the two pictures in this post: The top image is of the BNY Mellon Club, not the United Club.

Teams fly into Pontiac but from observation departure is out of DTW maybe because of weight restrictions.
