LAX-PVG especially. I remain surprised that UA seems willing to tolerate frequent (once a week, at least, it seems) delays of 4-5 hours on this route. Seems like an excellent way to drive away customers. As noted above, even if the inbound aircraft is on time, it's scheduled to arrive LAX approximately 1:30 before departure to PVG, which seems tight on a good day. And with the 787's having such frequent maintenance delays, this is a recipe for problems. And the rotations are scheduled so tightly that there is no time for recovery, so one delay trickles through the LAX-NRT-LAX-PVG-LAX schedule for days.

Is there no spare 787 that can be put on a morning IAH-LAX-IAH run, to be available to sub in at LAX for the NRT or PVG runs if need be?

I was on that one. I was doing a mileage run IND-IAH-NRT-ORD-IND.
  • IND-IAH - on time and no issues.
  • IAH-NRT (UA7) - delayed as stated. Worried because I had a quick turnaround in NRT. I made it to the next gate about 10 minutes before boarding, but....
  • NRT-ORD (UA882) - delayed initially due to late arrival and then for maintenance. Departed 1:19 late. Malfunctioning (or bad docking) jet bridge on arrival and we had to wait about 15 minutes before the door was opened.
  • ORD-IND (UA5978) - departed 3 hours late due to late arriving aircraft from Flint - AND - a passenger who couldn't get off the plane and required paramedics, fire and Chicago police to remove her so that we could board.

Just another couple of days in the life of United reliability - 25% on-time record for me.

BTW, I had excellent service IAH-NRT in BF (777). Senior Houston-based crew but very attentive and friendly. The only hiccup was the fact that the FA kept calling me by the wrong last name; I appreciated her effort though! A flight attendant was injured as we landed - tripped over another FA's bag and sprained her ankle. Paramedics were called and I sincerely hope she is OK.

NRT-ORD in BF (747 in 15K on the upper deck; cross that off the bucket list!). Japanese FAs were polite and efficient but nothing special. Had to ask for a PDB; the FA explained they were rushed to push due to the maintenance delay.

UA78 NRT-EWR Status: In Flight - Estimated to Arrive 1 Hour 54 Minutes Late. Looks like it departed about 2 hours late due to the late arrival of UA7.

Yes, they are turning the plane used for 104 last night, which was delayed (see my post further up the thread)

I guess the one positive to the frequency of UA's 757's having to divert crossing the atlantic is that they are experts at it. Most flights are landing iin ewr only 75 minutes or so late.

messing up almost all connections ... not a smart idea. Sure, they can turn them around and fly the next TATL that night, but they have to deal with a ton of inconvenienced passengers
