Jan 24, 2006Greetings! Has anyone ever flown to South Africa w/a dog? I have decided that I am going to bring my French Bulldog gilles with me on business and would love to get any tips or advice on this you could offer

two concerns of mine woukd be:
cost....get from airline
quarantine....get from southafrican officials, might be on their web site, try google...

Also consider whether you want him to travel in cargo, as I think French Bulldogs likely exceed the weight allowed for in-cabin travel (usually something like 17 pounds, at least on some airlines).
We are flying from new york to cape town. She will be doing a little work on behalf of our company visiting orphanages but other than that she is just there as a guest..

She is a big girl, but I would feel much more comfortable if she traveled in the cabin with me.

i didn't think you could take animals in the cabin on international trips, but I am no expert on that. Also on a non-direct flight, there would be massive issues with letting an unquarantined animal out into the terminal...
Here's the vet health certificate required to import dogs into SA - it's a pdf. But it's also from the aphis website... so I would certainly check with the South African embassy if that is the most current format and what else would be required (notice they ask for an import permit no.). I'd also check with usda/aphis about return of dogs from SA to the USA to check what you would require to re-import your dog into the US following his trip to SA. The USDA page on importation of animals to SA may be found at http://www.aphis.usda.gov/vs/ncie/iregs/animals/sf.html

If your dog doesn't fit under the seat, she will have to go as cargo. However, you will waive liability for a brachycephalic dog (squished nose dogs-- pugs, bulldogs, mastiffs, etc.) because these dogs have a higher incidence of respiratory failure under environmentally stressful conditions (temperature and pressure changes). Probably best for your dog if she stays at home. She will miss you but she will be safer that way.

It would be terrible to leave her at home because we will be gone for over 3 months and the children at the orphanage our company works with (www.gosococo.com) were so excited about having her come visit everyday. I think I just have to find some way that she is able to fly in the cabin with me

I hear ya, hattie. I love my dogs more than anything. But I wouldn't risk their lives by putting them on a plane if I know that it is dangerous for them. The only way you'll be able to keep an oversized dog in the cabin is *maybe* if you buy a seat for her. And I'm not sure if dogs are even allowed in the cabin on international flights (no matter how well behaved or beloved they are). Maybe you could adopt a local dog for 3 months and then leave the dog at the orphanage (along with a donation to cover the costs of caring for the dog) to keep the kids company after you are gone?
