Exclamation Please consider helping countries affected by Tsunami

A modest proposal:

This is a great community. If everyone would consider donating to the charity of their choice some of the money that FT has saved them this would be a wonderful gesture!

Wasn't sure where to post - if this is the wrong forum please move.

Wow - no responses and we get congas of 100's for free whatevers Doesn't anybody need a tax deduction (at least for those of us in the US). Anyway my charity of choice is Save the Children.

Exclamation Help to buy rice in Sri Lanka

Okay - I'll kick this one off.

For those of you who would like to contribute something, but are unsure where to direct your funds, please consider AFLAC International (http://www.aflacinternational.com).

AFLAC is an acronym for Association For Lighting A Candle and is a Sri Lankan based organization. AFLAC was founded by Capt. Elmo Jayawardena, a Sri Lankan pilot employed with Singapore Airlines. He and an executive committee of five directors run AFLAC.

AFLAC was formed in 1995 with the purpose of alleviating poverty in Sri Lanka. It is modeled on the belief that every person can do something to help another, irrespective of class, wealth and status.

Founded upon the quote: It is better by far to light one solitary candle than to curse the darkness, AFLAC believes that everyone has the capacity to light a candle, be it large or small, which will shed some light on someone else's darkness.

I personally know one of the directors who works for Singapore Airlines in Colombo. He has helped me during several of my trips to Sri Lanka so I am more than happy to return the favor to help him raise much needed funds. Fortunately, Rajitha and his family are safe, though he writes:
AFLAC has identified the Hambantota District which is one of the worst effected areas in Sri Lanka in the aftermath of the Tsunami disaster.

We are collecting money to purchase rice to be distributed among the families there. The target of the District Organizer is to collect 100,000 kgs of rice which will feed the families for one week.

AFLAC has made an initial contribution toward the cost of 1,000 kgs of rice. We are confident that we will be able to collect money to fund the purchase of much more rice than our promised amount. A Kilo of rice will cost Rs 40/- * and can be purchased from Tissamaharama which is the the Hambantota Distinct itself and stocks are available.
*Rs 40/- is the equivalent of US.38¢, or €.28¢.

I urge you to consider helping this organization. You can make a donation in US Dollars, Singapore Dollars, and Sri Lankan Rupees. Please visit http://www.aflacinternational.com/pages/tsunami.asp for details.

You can also contact AFLAC directly in Sri Lanka or at one of their many branches worldwide:

good day,

latitudes has given us a good way we can make contributions out of our own pocket.

for the benefit of those who may not know it, let me share how you can make worldwide contributions not out of your own pocket.

this web site, www.thehungersite.com, allows you to click once per 24 hours. what happens? the sponsors, not you, will donate a cup of food per click.

so, just by calling up the web page and clicking a button, you can help to feed the world.

there is no obligation for you to even visit a sponsor's web site, or buy anything from any of them.

and, there are links at the top of the page for other worthy causes -- mammograms for those in need, literacy, child health, etc.

and, again at each of those sites you simply click and the sponsors contribute, not you.

pretty cheap and easy.

On a similar note (pardon the pun), does anyone know of any organization (preferably an organization that deals with kids) that could use all those neat pens and note pads that we take from hotels?

Thank you for posting and cross posting the AFLAC info, I'll be posting their link on some other sites I frequent and sending some $ their way. I was considering the best place to send $ and after checking out AFLAC, it looks like a pretty good deal.

Might I suggest people check the Announcement at the top of every page.

Randy stepped forward during the 9/11 crisis and is doing so again.

A great way to ensure 100% of your donation goes where it is needed.

In the UK the Disasters and Emergency Committee will be later today launching a joint appeal on behalf of the major aid agencies in the UK. Donations can be made on-line at www.dec.org.uk or by phone on 0870 60 60 900

Remember if you are a UK tax payer to gift aid any donation so the government pays the tax to the appeal as well.

Doctors without Borders/Medecines sans Frontieres

This is a great organization that does emergency medical work in poor areas all over the planet. The are very efficient (only 15% of their budget is spent on admin. and non-care related services). I already posted their US website url in the Marriott and AC fora, but here is another one: http://www.msf.org/

This is the organization that received the Nobel Peace prize in 2001 (give or take a year).

Also, to the extent reasonably possible, don't cancel trips to the affected regions. Many places, like Phuket, depend almost solely on tourism for their local economies. If everyone stops going to these places, the recovery will take that much longer and the suffering will be that much deeper.

If you can go, your trip might be a little different (you might be helping with relief efforts rather than relaxing on the beach), but it should still be rewarding and fulfilling.

I was supposed to go to Galle Sri Lanka next month but cancelled.

Checked with the person I was dealing with there and he recommended

www.adoptsrilanka.com

Luckily he and his family are safe but lots of death and destruction.
