Where to fly interesting rare planes

Hi All,

i'm into planes a bit and was wondering where to fly rare (old) planes still in use as commercial airplanes.

maybe it's interesting to start a wiki on it?

Biplane rides from a grass strip on the southeast corner of Martha's Vineyard. Definitely commercial; you won't ride free!

Iran is the first place that comes to mind, with the ability to fly the 747-200 and 747SP, along with the A300/310. In North America, both Air Inuit and Air North operate the 737-200, but the prices are almost always prohibitively expensive whenever I have checked.

Africa offers a fair number of interesting options. But it's a somewhat risky proposition. Still, not many places you can catch a ride in an Il-18.

Buffalo Airways in Yellowknife, Canada operates passenger service on a DC-3. I know there are others flying the DC-3 in various spots around the world.

I flew DC-3s in the late 1980s between Miami and Key West (Provincetown-Boston Airlines). Probably the most comfortable airplane I've ever been in.

I suspect there are (or, sadly, were) a lot of guys who used to have to jump out of them who might disagree with you.

There are amazing flight reports on some old Illyushins in North Korea. For American oldirs, as mentionned Iran seems the place to go.

One of my friends runs a tour operator to North Korea that specialises in aviation tours.

It is called Juche Travel Services.

According to their site you can fly on Tu-204-100, IL-62, Tu-134, An-24, IL-18, Tu-204-100/300, Tu-154, IL-76, IL-62, An-148 and Mi-17.

Sorry to bump this old thread. It seems Buffalo Air is no longer operating passenger flights. Where to fly the old vintage aircrafts then?

Some smaller carriers, and many second and third world carriers buy older used planes. First Air in Canada was using old 727-200's..not sure if they still are. But carriers in Africa are still running DC-9's, 727's, DC-8's, and even some old Hawker Sidley Tridents. If you want to go to North Korea, Air Koryo flies ancient Tupolevs, Iluyshins and Antonovs. Some of those old Russian planes are also being used on carriers in the middle and far east.

Tiny remote carriers, such as those that get you around the arctic, are even using DC-3s and 4's.
