Many thought the change in rules would take ages but it seems that the FAA moved very quickly (for a government agency in particular).

The Federal Aviation Administration announced Thursday that it will allow airlines to expand passenger use of portable electronic devices such as tablet computers and smartphones during all phases of flight.

The change in rules was announced by FAA Administrator Michael Huerta.

The implementation of the rule change will vary by airline and airlines ...

Wall Street Journal has sidebar story picking winners and losers. Story suggests airlines with satellite-based WiFi will be winners because they can offer gate to gate connectivity while airlines that use ground-based WiFi can only provide at altitude.
