My first 747 experience was on the Big Orange from LGW-DFW in 1979 .

Since then have flown 100+ 747 flights on 16 different airlines (BN, BA, People Express, BCal, NW, LH, QF, UA, CX, CI, SQ, TG, OZ, JL, NH, and PR).

I have a round-trip LHR-JFK Upper deck CW on BA next week and am hoping there will still be a few more before it bows out of service.

I don't think either will be going anywhere.

Airbus will do a re-engine deal with EK and a handful of others to keep the A380 alive, and the freighters will keep the 747 programme ticking over. To cancel either would reach far beyond the profit/loss of the aircraft programmes themselves.

Ultimately, either programme does need orders to keep it going and it's pretty marginal with just one of the aircraft in production - with two, you've split the very few potential purchases in half.

In 1972 I flew Braniff's Big Orange from Dallas Love Field to Honolulu, the only non-stop in the area. It was a great flight, even Y in those days was decent. That was followed by an AA 707 to SYD, Australia. Those were the days

Quite a few trips on Pan Am 747s in the early days and I remember some (on SAA, I think) where economy was upstairs, a particularly civilised arrangement.

BA had economy upstairs on their 747s at least until the late 90s. The extra width and only 3-3 made it feel less like a cattle truck.

Yeah, cattle class is depressing
