Quite a few trips on Pan Am 747s in the early days and I remember some (on SAA, I think) where economy was upstairs, a particularly civilised arrangement.
BA had economy upstairs on their 747s at least until the late 90s. The extra width and only 3-3 made it feel less like a cattle truck.
