Since there have been some comments expressing concern that the number (and percentage) of TB members who vote in TB elections has been declining, I decided to try to find the actual numbers for comparison. My apologies go in advance to Kiwi Flyer for taking the liberty to post the data in his excellent thread.

In the early years, Randy apparently didn't post numbers for TB elections, although it does seem possible to find the number of vacancies and the number of candidates on the ballot for at least some of these years. In 2010, the last year for which Randy posted the list of winners as our FT Founder, he reported that 1852 ballots were cast but our (then new) CD reported it later as 1875.

2011: 1375 ballots cast

2012: 1068 ballots cast

2013: 738 ballots cast

2014: 597 ballots cast

2015: 468 ballots cast

And if the trend continues:

2016: 333 ballots cast.

The new Talkboard members should probably come up with some ideas on how to reverse this trend.

The number of people standing for election each year would also be interesting.

I know it was way down this year, but the number of TB vacancies varies from year to year. Moreover, term limits were imposed about five years ago and before then, some TB members tended to serve for a very long time.

Our job is to drum up more votes? That's a tall order. As much as that would be nice, I would prefer TB spend its time enhancing the content and the user experience. To me, the numbers show a distinct level of disinterest in TB, and perhaps indicates that it's time to consider a new form of member governance. Maybe TB should come up with some ideas on how to address that. @:-)

I'll ponder it a bit over turkey and adult beverages.
