I will be resigning from Talkboard-but for a good reason

It is with regret that I will be resigning my position as a TalkBoard member but it is for a good reason.

I have been asked to serve as a Moderator in the United forum and I said both during my candidacy for election to TalkBoard and for my re-election, I believe a TalkBoard member should not be a Moderator and a Moderator should not serve on TalkBoard and I still believe that so I am staying true to my principles.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time serving on TalkBoard and I do hope that I have served well and have been good for Flyertalk. I may not have agreed with all of you at times and have at times “stirred the pot” on occasion but the decisions I made were hopefully the best for Flyertalk.

I have informed the Community Director and both the TalkBoard President & Vice President of my decision and will, in order to keep 9 members on the board, keep my seat until my replacement (according the rules under resignation) is seated on the board.

I am looking forward to my new duties but I sincerely want to thank all of you for the opportunity to serve.

David

I'm not a moderator & I've never really bought into the a TB member can't be a moderator thought process, but I appreciate your willingness to 'walk your talk'.

When I first read your post I figured it was going to be for 2 reasons: a) you won the lotto & were going to spend the rest of your life on a beach somewhere with drinks that had little umbrellas in them & thus wouldn't care about FT ; b) the United forum was going to be taking up all your time because it's busy (and a bit snarky)

Thank you so much for serving. TB & FT has benefited from you serving on TB & you will be missed. I'm sure the United forum will benefit from you serving as well.

PS - Now that you're a mod, no one can say anything negative about you because of TOS, unlike when you served on TB

CONGRATULATIONS! ^

Condolences.

I'm glad to see someone is holding up those principles. Separation of powers is healthy for FT.

Me neither. IMHO the only prerequisite should be a willingness to be engaged and active in addressing the issues that come before the board. Regardless I also respect OP's decision and will add my thanks for his time on the TB team. ^

I don't remember goalie's reasoning, but I support a separation of powers (moderators cannot be on TalkBoard, TalkBoard cannot be moderators) in part because there are a limited number of spots for members to serve FlyerTalk as moderators and/or on TalkBoard. To maximize member engagement/willingness to help, we should limit the number of roles one can have at any time.

Also, if TalkBoard happened to have super-majority of moderators, it could, in essence, allow moderators to have more power, without any sort of relief for general members.

It's going to be sad to see him go

For what it's worth, I believe, if he wants the job still, Jason8612 will get the vacated spot.

The CD is the relief for general members should it ever come to the scenario you're suggesting which I can't personally see happening though for obvious reasons.

Unless I am mistaken, the general members are the ones who vote for the Talkboard. Aren't the elections their "relief"? If they did not want moderators as Talkboard members, I would expect they would not vote them in.

We have seen many moderators not get elected to Talkboard.
