Thanks very much for the reply. Unfortunately, I dithered, and missed a chance to book the Hilton for a great pre-paid rate with breakfast. Said package is now several hundred dollars more. Whereas, I can book either the GM or the Meredien for cash and points, so that's much cheaper for us. I guess I'll keep checking the Hilton website, but may just end up at the GM to save $$. Thanks again.

This is now being addressed and all prices will "soon" be in Mauritian Rupees. Customer complaints of the issue was one of the reasons for this change.

carrier.co.uk is offering pay 7 get 7 (50% off)

not sure if it combines with 10% discount for booking 30 days in advance.

Any recent stays for anyone here? I'm thinking of going there for a C and P stay which is an EXCELLENT value at almost 10 cents per point if redeemed based on their lowest available rate.

Love to hear some positives or negatives.

The Grand Mauritian is closing from July 7, 2010 for one month.

They are building a beach and it will be to distrubtive to guests so they are closing instead.

These are some old trip reports... I'm in the fortunate position of having SPG + Hilton points, and I really can't figure out which one i'd rather stay at!

Mauritius advice asap!!!!

HELP!

Have a booking for a suite at the Hilton Mauritius right now

I just discovered the Grande Mauritian though!

I am looking for somewhere modern, stylish, private and luxurious for an island romance.

Which one should I book?

I would do half board at both hotels.

and All I want to do is enjoy the privacy of my room or lay on the beach.

Quiet and relaxed.

Need to know NOW

already looked at tripadvisor, seems the Grand is better choice, but anyone who has been would like your advice.

thanks

I have stayed at both admittedly 2 years ago and when the GM was just opening. I would take the Hilton over the GM anytime. It was just a better resort, with better larger real suites, better dining options, a real beach (possibly now corrected with the beach built at the GM), more choices of shopping/dining etc. beyond the immediate hotel and markedly better service.

If you can do a few days in each location there is something to be said for splitting your stay between both ends of the island as we did as there are different things to do near each, but if it is one or the other take the Hilton.

The GM rooms are small and not terribly well configured (albeit nicely furnished). I would avoid Half Board as a dining option at either location. 6 days a week at the Hilton the HB food is buffet and of varying standards, the credit received at the 2 other restaurants is very small and as a Gold/Diamond you should get free breakfast anyway.
