Notes about the W Amsterdam:
- The hotel is divided between two buildings. The Bank building is reported to be quieter and less of a scene. Each building has a Platinum breakfast offering and guests can try either regardless of which building your room is in; more details about breakfast are included in this post.
- Many people have reported limited upgrade availability.

Noise will be an issue for a lot of rooms at the W, are talking about a prime location, so several major tram lines are passing by and taking turns.
Noise is not really a factor at the Andaz, although some boats tend to be noisy as well.
Considering that the rates for both properties will go down to the 200's for a limited time only and should be around 350 and higher for most of the time, I strongly suggest taking a closer look at the competition.
Des Indes is a 10 minute walk and 30 minute train ride away from downtown Amsterdam; it is a lovely hotel and saves you $200-250 a night. I voiced my appreciation for the Sheraton AMS multiple times already, spa, nice club lounge, free full breakfast buffet for Platinum members and savings of $200 on average should not be underestimated.
Great to have another SPG option in Amsterdam managed by the same great folks who run the other properties. ^

Same here, except I was visiting from California and had asked about even a quick tour. (Andaz has been far more generous in offering previews to their elite members knowing they are the best way to get word of mouth out about new properties.) I guess $tarwood just wants the $.
I do not expect a free night at the property like Hyatt used to do it back in the days when the Park Milan or Zurich opened, but I do expect some information and offers for elite members of SPG in the NL, Belgium and Germany in the upcoming months.

At this point, we should give them the benefit of the doubt. The area manager enjoys an excellent reputation (not only on FT) for customer service and since the hotel is far away from being finished, we should grant them some more time.

Had a recent stay here and found it rather mixed. Didn't particularly like the building itself, it's rather 'dark and miserable', but the views from certain parts of the property are great and I really liked the bar, especially the outdoor areas.
I got a room on the second floor facing right over the tramlines and it was very noisy. If staying there again, and at the rates currently quoted that probably won't be for a while, I would request, nay demand, a higher floor room on the other side of the building.
As a Hyatt Diamond and Starwood Plat who has stayed at both properties the Andaz, absolutely no debate whatsoever in my eyes. Unless you really have to be close the area where the W is.
I totally agree. I am a big fan of the Schiphol property and it's handy staying there when going to Rotterdam on business with the 28 minute train from Schiphol.

For me it is relatively easy, save the $$$ for the Andaz or the W, stay at the Sheraton AMS or the Des Indes, maybe even the HP AMS, and invest the savings into museums, food, art etc.

Didn't they install double-glazed sound-reduction windows?

This property doesn't sound great. I'll be in Amsterdam in a few days and looking at the W and the DoubleTree. Both free on points. W would obviously be newer, modern and "nicer" but wondering how much worse the DT will really be.
Also, anyone have thoughts/comments on the locations of the two? Both seem like decent locations within walking distance to lots of the cities attractions.

Ross0, any update on your stay at W Amsterdam?
I'll be staying there tomorrow (on points, SPG Gold member). Info I received from the hotel today is that the pop up activities have ended, with Olivia Cooney no longer providing gym classes, and the gym is still closed (but free entry to the nearby 'Train More' available).
Location looks excellent (right behind the Palace is considered super prime location), and my friends in Amsterdam mention the W as a one of the new hip places in Amsterdam.
I'll report back after my stay.

Here now. Hotel is new and modern but far from luxury. Room and common areas have some kinks (e.g., we had a leak in our room, lights in room are odd, black out shade is broken, common areas are still under construction). Staff is polite but young, inexperienced and more interested in partying.
As a gold, I was upgraded one room category

I stayed at the W Amsterdam a few days before Christmas (on points, 20k).
The location is great. It is right in the middle of Amsterdam.
I liked the room, all hip and trendy as at other W's. Contrary to other posters everything worked in our room. Room faced the palace and a very busy street (incl street cars) , and I don't remember hearing any noise.
We had some drinks in the bar on the 6th floor. Hip and cool place.
Staff was friendly and professional, and as mentioned before, young.
There seems to still be some construction going on. I saw some workers, and plastic on the hallway floor. I found the hallways to be too dark anyway, but that's my opinion. The layout of the floors is somewhat odd and confusing, but these are older buildings that were initially not intended to be a hotel. I liked the high ceilings though.
I exchanged some emails with the W Insider (Daan). Got a nice chocolate house gift - not sure if this was due to being Gold or those emails.

Anyone else stayed at both properties? Is the Andaz far superior to the W? I have an upcoming trip and am trying to decide between the two. My normal spot [Crowne Plaza City Centre] is completely booked for part of my stay - so need alternative. I am plat with Passport and LT Gold with SPG, if that matters.
