KLM Longhaul Irregularities Thread

With an apparantly increasing number of longhaul delays, cancellations and other disruptions at KLM, I thought it might be interesting to set up a list for a while, so people will eventually see what flights are more delay prone than others and might be avoided if alternatives are available. Here I go, feel free to add.

Monday, May 21

KL735/736 AMS CUR AMS B744
Flight cancelled because of technical problems with the aircraft and no spare capacity.

KL686 MEX AMS B74E
Flight delayed for 3 hours after hard landing in Mexico City. Hard landing inspection needed. Will arrive in AMS 2 hours late.

KL577 AMS ABV KAN AMS A332
Damaged aircraft at Kano. Flight will arrive 3 hours late in AMS.

KL754 GYE UIO BON AMS MD11
Technical problems with the MD11 at Guayaquil caused 2h30 delay. Flight will arrive in AMS 90 minutes late.

Good idea! ^ This might even qualify for a sticky. It seems that these problems are going to stick around for a while.

No, it's not. The aircraft pushed back at 10.30, took off at 10.58 and is enroute to Newark with 284 passengers on board. Estimated to arrive there at 12.39 local time.

28 minutes between push back and take off? That's a bit much.

That all depends on what are the active taxi and runways, where the aircraft is parked and what kind of obstacles it meets between the parking bay and the active runway. Here are some other widebody flights of today's 10am departure wave and their push back, take off and taxi times:

KL791 B772 GRU 1005 - 1020 * 15min
KL597 B772 CPT 1018 - 1034 * 16min
KL743 B772 LIM 1018 - 1050 * 32min
KL621 A332 ATL 1020 - 1049 * 29min
KL661 B74E IAH 1025 - 1052 * 27min
KL565 B74E NBO 1028 - 1044 * 16min
KL657 MD11 EWR 1030 - 1058 * 28min
KL591 B74E JNB 1037 - 1104 * 27min
KL611 B74E ORD 1039 - 1109 * 30min
KL543 A332 KRT 1047 - 1114 * 27min

JFK airport is particularly notorious when it comes to very very long times between pushback and take-off. Sometimes the queuing on the taxi way can take well over an hour!

LHR, whilst not as bad, is not great either.

At AMS it's because some of the runways are so far - at least you're moving, albeit most probably in the wrong direction!

I was at JFK last year ... first a 15 minute taxi, only to be told we were now the 25th plane in line for take-off ... another 45 minutes wait ...

Cheers,
