New Promotion: Free Worldwide Ticket (in Y or C) for travelling in F or C

Hi all, just spotted this:

Ticket to the World (MPE 094)

Register now and fly a paid, qualifying roundtrip between the U.S. and Europe or Asia in United First® or United Business® to earn a free award ticket to the world

Spin the globe and pick your destination — with so many options on United’s route map, you can go practically anywhere.

To earn your free award ticket to the world, simply register and fly United® between the U.S. and Europe or Asia (excluding Sydney and Melbourne, Australia) from October 15, 2004 through February 15, 2005, in United First (F or A class) or United Business (C or D class).

One paid, qualifying roundtrip earns a United Economy® award ticket (XY class); or

Two paid, qualifying roundtrips earn a United Business award ticket (XC class).

Award tickets are valid for roundtrip travel anywhere United flies between April 1, 2005 and December 31, 2005, excluding blackout dates

Terms and Conditions of the Offer:
Important Notes: Passenger must fly on a paid, qualifying United transatlantic or transpacific roundtrip flight between the U.S. and Europe or Asia with fares in F, A, C or D booking class for travel between 10/15/04 and 02/15/05 to earn a free United Economy class Saver Award ticket. Fly an additional qualifying transatlantic or transpacific roundtrip during the same time period and earn a free Saver Award ticket in United Business class on United-operated and marketed flights systemwide.

To Qualify: Valid flights must include a transatlantic or transpacific itinerary on flights between the U.S. and Europe or Asia that are operated by United, but not on United-marketed code-share flights operated by other carriers. Not valid on marketed code-share flights of other carriers operated by United. Sydney (SYD) and Melbourne (MEL) are not qualifying destinations for this offer. Travel beyond international gateway or beyond U.S. gateway is permitted when flown on a direct flight operated and marketed by United. This offer is not combinable with other offers and may be earned a maximum of one time. Passengers may not earn both awards. If a passenger travels once within the allotted travel period, then he will earn a free United Economy XY ticket. If a passenger travels twice within the allotted travel period, then he will earn a free United Business XC ticket.

Min./Max. Stay Requirements: Per rule of the published fare purchased.

Valid Routing: Open jaws are permitted per rules of the published fare purchased as long as all the above conditions are met.

Membership Requirements: Offer valid for all Mileage Plus members, where local laws permit [not targeted]. Registration is required by 02/15/05 to be eligible for the offer. Qualifying flights must be posted to the Mileage Plus account in order to qualify for this offer. This comment must be for everyone who thinks Australia is part of Europe or Asia...

It is nice that the free ticket doesn't have this restriction, though.

"No changes can be made after ticketed departure date for any portion of the ticket. Changes made before departure date are subject to a service charge of USD100."

This being an award ticket on all UA flights, I guess this does not apply to date changes on the ticketed routing, otherwise this is of great concern. Another award ticket rule/restriction? I surely hope not!

No, it's more like a promotion award ticket restriction. The 1-for-2 promotion free ticket has the same restriction.

Must originate in USA?

Or can we buy\start the ticket overseas, say in ChiliCrabCountry?

Thanks for the clarification, Windflier.
Nevertheless, this restriction is severe and puts a damper on the entire promo. UA should apply the same conditions as on other, "regular" XY, XC tickets. This might catch and upset the very customers UA is trying to attract and keep (high-revenue premium class flyers) - not a smart move by UA, IMHO.

I imagine UA's regards these more like a VDB voucher (which has the $100 change fee) then an XY/XC Award Ticket (which doesn't).

The majority of these tickets (especially the Economy ones) are probably going to be either given as gifts, or as a way to get family members to a family shindig. If you fly paid F or C (be it your dime or someone else's), you earn enough RDMs to get an XF or XC award to your own leisure travel. So folks using them will be on fixed travel dates for vacations or holidays, I imagine.

The Business award has much more value, but again, people who use it will most likely be using it for pre-defined trips, not as a "replacement" for an Award itinerary where they would need flexability in travel dates.

I could very well imagine a UA high-rev flier using this along with some miles for a couple of e.g. C-award tickets - happily holding 2 XC tickets. Now he is on his trip - say next spring in Europe (with wife/family) and has a chance to add a couple more days. He calls up UA and wants to book new dates, just to be told: "Sir, this XC ticket you can change, but that XC you cannot! You want to fly back another date, your ticket is void. Buy another business class ticket!"
Bang! Do you think he will go for the same promotion or another UA promotion again?

Is this a typical black out date? It seems awfully odd. Who are they trying to stop from using it during this time?

Late May/early June is the typical start of the summer travel season (when fares go from shoulder- to high-season).

My experience with that time period to Europe is that flights are unbelievably packed during that period - so they may have figured take the revenue from coach pax paying high season fares and upgrade the people who buy B, M, etc. rather than taking on the free tickets.

I believe this past May/June, Atlantic flights are extremely full to the point where UA was discouraging employees from travelling standby as hundreds would end up stranded in Europe for days or even weeks.
