Driving between Key Largo and Key West

We will be driving the 90 miles from Key Largo to Key West later this week. We are not divers or fisherpersons, so my question is whether there are any "must see" stops along the way or should we go straight to Key West?

Thanks for any advice.

If you need/want to stop for food, I would suggest either Lorilei's or the Hungry Tarpon. You can feed Tarpon at Hungry Tarpon. http://www.robbies.com/tarpon.htm
Great bay views at Lorileis.

Also, you may want to check out the endangered Key Deer. http://www.fws.gov/nationalkeydeer/

I always enjoy stopping at Bahia Honda State Park. Mile marker 37. Good place to streach the legs with a nice walk, take a dip in the clear water, and look around at the old US 1 bridge. Other activities are available and there is a small visitor center with information. Fee of $8 for one vehicle.

I too have stopped here many times. I used to drive from Miami to Key West when sis lived there. I had my 2 children with me, so it was a very welcome spot to stop. Especially since we were flying in from New Hampshire!!!!

OK, the kids used to make me stop at Shell Shack too, but I wont suggest that!

If you're interested in history then Pigeon Key is worth a visit. We did the guided tour a few years ago.

Generally speaking I would say that whatever you do you should plan on a slow leisurely drive, allowing yourself time to just stop and look around when you feel like it. It's just such a lovely trip (so much so after doing it by car a couple of times I decided to get to Key West the sloooow way one year by renting a bicycle in Key Largo!)
