MEL-YVR in Y $ 2200 roughly when I would have booked a few months ago
MEL-YVR in+ $4200 roughly when I would have booked a few months ago
AC
MEL-YVR Via Syd on their new 777's in Y was around $2100
MEL-YVR Via Syd in C I have for $8000 roughly, part of an American Express Deal
So compariable well yes and no depending how you look at it, my thoughts:
I don't enjoy sitting in Economy for 14hours + so I would travel in Y+
As I have said Y+ on NZ 777's is a waste of time, middle of two bassient rows, small cramped cabin, 3-3-3 seating, no good for the 2 of us, most likely we'll be next to someone. For the $4200 price tag, I cannot justify nearly double the price of Y for slightly better seat pitch. The width of the seats are the same on the 777 in Y+.
So I turned my attention elsewhere, AC had a great deal with American Express, $8000 return in their new C class, NZ want around $12,000 for the same thing, so I booked on AC. Yes it's alot more than standard Y class. I would have been happy enough to book in Y+ on the 744 but as they are operating the 777 on this leisure route, I took my business elsewhere
Back to the topic though:
AC is very new with their AVOD and are using the Thales system, at the moment they only have around 12 movies, and 50 hours of TV shows. They update once per month, but the selection is limited, which is good for some and not for others
They are still trailing the moving map, news, and other features and are meant to roll them out in January, hopefully before I leave on Jan 30th.

Though I do agree with you about the NZ Y+ seats on the 777. I certainly wouldn't pay for it, and at that sort of fare level it's a bit of a joke.

OT - Air NZ Review AKL-LAX 08/11/07 NZ2
No cue for check in, and only 1 security line was open, again no cue. Lounge was very quite, as was the flight, the load in Y+ was light, and Y seemed like it was not even 50% full. No cue for showers and they had battered hot dogs as the hot option, the dessert that was brought round was a choice of cheese cake or Pavalova I think.
I did not receive the seat I had requested the day after booking. Again, check staff in lied to me, I was informed that there were no isle seats forward of mine, upon boarding I counted maybe 6 or 7 (very poor form Air NZ).
Dinner was a choice of herb crusted chicken or Lamb casserole.
Crew (NZ based) was efficient (not that it’s hard with such a light load). But not memorable, not at all friendly and the FA I had serving drinks always had a bit of an attitude, like I was wasting her time by asking for a couple of different drinks (like soda water to go with my wine). I have my LAX-LHR leg on UA (if I make the 2h54 connection), so I will have another crew to rebase my thoughts on.

The only complaint I would have is that it doesn't have some replays of Australian Rules Football. Last year's Grand Final would be a start - a great exhibition of the greatest winter game in the world :-)
