1. Background - About Us & The Trip:

We are a late twenties couple from Melbourne, Australia. We both work in professional services (I'm a management consultant, she's a lawyer) and share a love for travelling. Given the nature of our jobs (i.e. project based, not BAU roles) it's relatively easy for us to take off large chunks of time, so we try to go on a 4-5 week holiday every 2 years. Of course, this will all change once we start a family, so we're trying to take advantage of our freedom now!

Just as we had begun planning our trip for 2013 I stumbled across an excellent RTW fare opportunity ex-KRT (Khartoum, Sudan). Basically, a DONE4 (a Business Class oneworld explorer RTW; 16 segments across 4 continents) originating in KRT could be purchased for ~$4.5k USD all-in, compared to ~$12k USD from an Australian departure point. You can view the FT thread here, however unfortunately this deal is no longer live.

2. Background - Trip Planning - RTW Flight:

I phoned the AA RTW desk to have the itinerary built and then contacted an experienced Canadian travel agent to have it ticketed (under the OW 'Canadian exception' rule, which has since been removed, Canadian TAs could ticket an itinerary at the local/departure point price. The only other way would have been to have it ticketed in Sudan - which clearly wasn't going to happen). There were several dramas with ticketing the itinerary (which I wont go into here/now) that resulted in a couple of sleepless nights, however in the end it all worked out. NB: It's worth noting that my experiences with the AA RTW desk were second to none, excellent customer service.

We decided to break the RTW into 3 trips over the 12 month period.

Trip 1 (August): KRT-(AMM)-IST{-}ASR{-}IST-(LHR)-ARN{-}LHR-JFK-MIA-LAX-MEL
Trip 2 (December): MEL-AKL-MEL
Trip 3 (May): MEL-(HKG)-HND-(SIN)-HKG-DXB*

Those segments in {} were purchased separately (i.e. IST-ASR-IST, ARN-LHR)

3. Background - Trip Planning - Positioning Flights:

So, now I had to get us to KRT!

We had family holidaying in Dubai, so we decided to start our trip there. I used SQ points to redeem MEL-SIN in Suites and SIN-DXB in First Class on Singapore Airlines. We decided to spend 1 night in Singapore and 2 nights in Dubai. We then had to get from DXB to KRT. I wasn't keen on spending any time in Sudan and the TWOV has a 5 hour limit which significantly limits the number of flights that can be taken without having to arrange Visas, etc. I originally booked our flights on FlyDubai (DXB-KRT), however I didn't want to risk missing the Flydubai flight (LCC, last possible flight connection to KRT), as I understand that missing the first leg would result in the ticket needing to be re-issued. Normally not a major problem, however in this case the price would have gone back up to $12k. So instead, I re-booked onto Royal Jordanian from AMM-KRT, which meant that we were arriving on the same plane that we'd be departing on. These last minute flight changes ended up being a costly exercise, however it was all sorted. DXB-AMM on FlyDubai Economy Class, 2 days at the Dead Sea in Jordan, then AMM-KRT on Royal Jordanian Business Class (QFF redemption).

So, the positioning flights ended up being MEL-SIN-DXB-AMM-KRT.

Let the trip begin...

MEL-SIN on Singapore Airlines Suites & Intercontinental Singapore

Flight: Singapore Airlines SQ228
Route: Melbourne (MEL) - Singapore (SIN)
Equipment, Class: A380; Suites (SQ points redemption)
Seats: 2C & 2D, 3C & 3D
Flight Duration: 8 Hours

Ok, so not a great start to the TR… I lost my brand new Sony RX100 less than 24 hours after commencing the trip. As we was pulling into Changi T3 the taxi driver made a last minute swerve into the F departures driveway and the camera must have slipped off my lap. Needless to say, I didn't realise this until we were already in the Singapore Airlines Private Room… in fact I'd just ordered the Poached Lobster 30 seconds earlier.

We'd taken a few taxis that morning and I couldn't recall the colour of the cab (the ~8 companies all have different coloured taxis), which meant we had to cast a wide net in our search. The agent at the Private Room was great, and she spent almost an hour on the phone to the various cab companies trying to track it down. Unfortunately, to-date, the camera still hasn't been handed in. After consoling myself briefly, I ran back down to T3 to buy a new camera and literally found and purchased the last RX100 in the airport (turns out the RX100 v2 was released a few days later, hence the minimal stock). Camera charged, we were ready to board our next flight (DXB-SIN). The SQ agent was nice enough to arrange a golf buggy transfer to T2, which is quite a drive from T3!

In the absence of any decent pictures, a few notes from the first part of the trip:

The new Melbourne Silverkris lounge:
- A significant improvement over the old lounge, which was looking very tired
- The J section is nice and bright, although quite noisy when full (as was the case when I was there)
- The F section is darker and more 'intimate'. I liked the oversized chairs and general layout
- The food hasn't improved. I'd heard it was being catered by Cafe Vue, however I'd take the Qantas Club domestic lounge food over what was being served. The same food was served in F/J, however F had the premium alcohol section

The MEL-SIN flight:
- This was my first time in the A380 Suites and, as expected, it was a great experience
- The cabin only had 3 pax (my girlfriend and I, and 1 other). We utilised both sets of the side-by-side suites; the front set was used for our general sitting/dining, and the back set was converted into the double bed
- A couple of iPhone pictures were taken which I've included below (sans faces), and I've also included the menu from the flight. I asked SQ to email us the menu prior to our flight, and I'm glad we did as the mains options weren't doing it for me. We both went for the Book The Cook Lobster Thermidor instead. There was also a 'refreshment' offered before landing (option of 2 hot meals), however we both declined.

(I had taken a picture of this shot on my iphone to send to a friend)

The Menu:

APPETISERS

Chilled malossol caviar
With melba toast and condiments

Western Australia rock lobster with caviar
quail egg and Russian salad

SOUPS

Pumpkin veloute with mussels and creme fraiche

Pork broth soup with papaya and almond kernel

SALAD

Salad of fresh spinach, whitloaf, taisoi lettuce, macadamia nuts, micro baby herb, ligurian olives
Creamy French dressing
Extra virgin olive oil-chardonnay vinegar dressing

MAIN COURSES

Roasted chicken breast with jus, leek puree, oyster mushrooms and baby carrot

Rangers Valley Angus beef fillet with mustard herb crust
Port wine sauce, red cabbage with bacon, green beans and roasted potatoes

Lamb biryani
Indian style lamb curry with spiced flavoured rice, cucumber pineapple salad and fried "papadum" cracker

Seafood and rice vermicelli soup
Rice vermicelli with prawns, fish and vegetables in broth

FINALE

Baked cheesecake with strawberry sorbet and tuile

Warm apple-raisin crepe with vanilla ice cream

Camembert, goat strzelecki, farmhouse sage derby and tarago marinated cheeses served with grapes and crackers

Fresh fruits in season

A selection of gourmet coffees & fine teas served with pralines

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hotel: Intercontinental Singapore
Length of Stay: 1 Night (<24 hour layover)
Room Type: Club Room (booked standard, received upgrade due to Royal Ambassador status)

- Not much to say as I've stayed here many times. I like the location (Bugis Junction) and the club lounge, and seeing as my stays in Singapore are generally < 24 hours I never bother to look elsewhere. We visited 'Gardens by the Bay' in the morning, which was a nice way to break-up the flights.

Next part will be SIN-DXB on SQ and the Hilton Dubai.

SIN-DXB on Singapore Airlines F

Flight: Singapore Airlines SQ494
Route: Singapore (SIN) - Dubai (DXB)
Equipment, Class: 777-300; First (SQ points redemption)
Seats: 1C & 1D
Flight Duration: 7 Hours 20 Minutes

After our buggy escort to the gate we boarded SQ494 for Dubai. We were the only passengers in First class and the service was exceptional (better than the previous Suites flight, which was fine, but on this flight they went 'above and beyond').

I had been on the SQ 777-300 in F before and I must admit that I prefer it to the Suites for general lounging and TV watching. First world problem, but I think the TVs in the Suites are too far away.

I had emailed SQ prior to the flight to receive a copy of the menu, and again didn't find the mains terribly appealing, so we both elected to 'book the cook' instead (baked prawns and grilled prawns respectively). The meal was good, although the prawns weren't shelled and a little messy to eat. We ate a couple of hours into the flight so declined the 2nd meal that is offered on this flight.

(A view of the empty seat next to me)

After we arrived we walked through Dubai airport for what seemed like 30 minutes before reaching customs and then baggage claim. The desert heat (~43C / 110F) hit us as we left the airport. After dodging a few waves of suspicious taxi drivers who were quoting 3-4x the standard fare, we reached the taxi stand where only women-only taxi drivers were lined up. I didn't take any pictures, so I've ripped this image from Google Images for illustrative purposes:

NB: I've just noticed that imageshack isn't very good at resizing images. I'll look for an alternative image service at some point, but in the interim if you click any of the above pictures (e.g. the menu pictures) there is a 'large' version of the image that hasn't been compressed too badly.

Hotel: Hilton Dubai Jumeirah Resort
Length of Stay: 2 Nights
Room Type: King Executive Suite (booked standard, received upgrade due to construction noise complaint and perhaps my comped HH Gold status)

We chose the Hilton because of its price (~ $140 per night), location and positive Trip Advisor reviews. There is a massive construction project next door which runs 24/7, so if you're over that side of the resort make sure you bring earplugs! We were originally allocated a standard room on the 'construction side' of the resort, however as we'd pre-requested a room on the other side we were moved/upgraded to a quiet Executive Suite.

The club felt a little like a retirement village, however it was fine for a quick drink. Being Ramadan, alcohol and was only served after sunset and no afternoon tea was served. We elected for breakfast downstairs, which was actually really good - good quality and a diverse selection (including a separate table on the side for pork related products).

Overall, the property is "fine", especially for the price. It's a bit run down and the surrounding construction work is a definite drawback.

(A view of some of the adjacent construction work)

(More land being "reclaimed")

(Creative housekeeping)

We only really had 1 full day in Dubai. We managed to squeeze in a private 4 hour city tour (all the "main sights") and then a desert safari and dinner. The desert safari was fun, although probably not great for those prone to motion sickness. We did ours in H2s.

Interesting idea.. RTW not starting in SYD or MEL. I've found RTW in business class on decent airlines starting at 10K and have put it on hold as there are two of us.

I recently found a SYD to SIN return in Singapore Airlines First Class Suites that was about AUD$6000. Since the A380's were introduced this has been on my wish list. However, now your post about a RTW that doesn't start from Australia has me thinking that maybe I can get a big major trip for similar money or less?

I'm now researching.

Can't wait for more instalments of your fabulous trip. I am so jealous!

Head to the OneWorld subforum which has ample discussion about a DONE5 (similar trip to OP's - Business Class, Round the World, 5 Continent fare on OneWorld) starting in Johannesburg which can be had for around/under 9k AUD per person.

Thanks. Well, in the first instance (SQ suites) they're the only pictures I have due to having lost my camera after the first leg. For the SQ F picture, I don't think my girlfriend would have appreciated me asking her to wait in the lavatory while I take a picture of the cabin .

Hi Annalisa,

Yes, there are definitely some great value RTW tickets originating from departure points outside of Australia. As per SQ421, head over to the OneWorld forum for some tips, or PM me if you need help.

Cheers
