What is NUC?

This isn't strictly a Mileage Run question, but the glossary doesn't mention this term, and a search indicated that this forum by far makes the most use of it. What exactly is NUC? It's apparently a form of currency, but what does is stand for, and what is its value?

(If this belongs in another forum, I'm open to suggestions about which one.)

NUC = neutral units of construction. A fictitious currency created by IATA for normalizing airfares across all countries. Sort of like USD but more stable.

First time I hear this term. Can you give an example of a phrase in which it would be used, or a post in which it was used?

It's used in airfare quotes, generally for international itineraries. You'll see it a lot on ITA software if you do international searches. If you run an FT search for NUC, you'll see lots of posts that use it.

i remember looking this up a while back. i was trying to find a site that would have the conversion rates for NUC to USD, etc. however the only sites i found required payment and seemed to be for TAs. has anybody been able to find a free site that displays the conversions? thanks

Hmm, that's slightly different from what Galileo agent told me.
He/She said it's Neutral Unit Currency.
I'll check it out with IATA agent.

I haven't contacted with IATA agent yet, but I think yours is correct.
I searched NUC in iata.org, and got five results.
Only one has "Las unidades neutras de construccin" in the page.
No results in English for full name.
To translate in English, "The neutral units of construction"

NUC was also (is) used in finding out the cost of a air ticket from, say, LHR-JFK, bought in the USA. In the 1990 s one could save money by buying a ticket in non-US Dollars!

I was always taught Neutral Unit Currency. Not that it matters.

If you look at a fare calc on a ticket, it might look like this:
RIO JJ X/SAO KL X/AMS Q15.00KL VCE M441.50KL X/AMS KL X/SAO Q15.00KL RIO M441.50NUC913.00END ROE1.000000PD XT30.78RN7.10VV11.36CJ6.22XA24.42IT6.43VT
It's used very extensively for proration.

Yes, and as you can see from the "ROE" (Rate of Exchange) following it, the NUC equals 1 US Dollar.

I saved roughly $100 per ticket when I bought a couple tickets on United's Singapore website rather than US' site. (Currency is the S$.)
