Maybe they would have, but at some other airports with less behemothic airlines, there is less time needed - for example, SQ at their hub Changi has a 40 min cutoff for checkin with luggage, so a 65 min transfer, even to a time critical flight, would be not so problematic. It's could be due to the flight oversold and looking for any excuse to move passengers, but it probably is due to the time criticality of the flight, and the sheer volume of transfers during one of EK's "waves" at DXB that made the transfer impossible.

Seriously, is this not the case? Telling pax that they missed their flight even though there's plenty of time remaining just to cover up for the fact... that they have no seats for them because they're already sold?

Even if this isn't the case I would never fly via DXB again. In SIN they will zip you through at light speed to make your connection. They will have carts waiting for elderly pax to race them through to the gate in no time at all.

As someone who used to work for QF, doing this sort of job, I did this all the time, particularly if a flight was oversold. Once an inbound flights ETA would have failed to meet the MCT, all connecting pax were offloaded and rebooked, and those who were waitlisted were confirmed.

*IF* there were still seats left, then those on the delayed inbound might be put back onto the original flight, in order of presentation (rather than FF status), but it is a fairly standard practice with most airlines (not with EU airlines, though, due to EU261).

Interesting read, thanks. I would have thought that this would especially be the case for flights involving the EU in order to prevent compensation claims.

Inbound is late... so the onwards flight is closed to prevent pax from being IDB'ed due to overselling. Then the airline can just raise their arms and say, "Sorry, you missed your connection." But we'll rebook you free of charge of course...

Ironically - paid a little more specifically for the original flight.....

SQ would probably even have someone waiting at the arrival gate with a sign directing you to your new gate, but then again if it was still 65 mins before the flight, they probably wouldn't.
Hell I got off a plane in Santiago with 15 minutes to get onto my flight to NZ/Aus due to sitting on the tarmac for 45 minutes waiting for a gate and still made my flight with my checked luggage. Was very promptly escorted through the airport to my next flight.
