For fares departing Canada, please do not just quote prices in "$" without clarifying which currency it is.
USD1968 = CAD2660 which is okay, but not exceptional for YVR to Asia.

This is actually an AC fare, not an NH fare, and not your run of the mill discount biz class fare. Allows 1 free stopover (not to exceed 14 days) and other stopovers for $100. Also, allows a large number of AC coded flights across the water and then many carriers once in Asia (JL, KE, OZ, CX...)
No minimum stay, so also easy to use this as a tag on of extra miles to SE Asia when your destination is actually N Asia (just do a quick turn in KUL).

Actually I think the example the OP posted is an NH fare as NH is the primary carrier - AC and UA also offer the same fares, slightly different routings though. Reasonable fare nonetheless. Also similar fares YVR to SIN,BKK,TPE, SGN,MNL as posted in other threads.

I booked YVR-HND-KUL/SIN-TPE-YVR during Xmas holidays with stopovers in HND and TPE for ~$2000. Paid with AmEx points, ended up costing only 100k.
NH metal on the outbound and EVA/AC on the back. Routings on SQ were also possible.

i dont think so. The UA fare is a routing based fare, it specifies a couple dozen allowable routings and specifically states HIP is not applicable as it is a routing based fare ("ROUTING FARES ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR HIP CHECKS"). The AC fare is MPM based but also has a HIP exception (rules say "HIP surcharge should be ignored") and in theory should allow transit thru (and thus a free stopover in) HKG. The NH fare doesnt appear to allow routing thru HKG.
