Except when an FSD or TSO decides they do have to be pulled out and put in a separate bin.

FWIW, I've had trouble (i.e., a bag check) several times when I've left my Kindle in my bag. The TSO finds it and chastises me: "this should be taken out of your bag". I have a Kindle DX, and perhaps its larger size relative to the standard Kindle leads to this issue. Now I just take it out to avoid the hassle.

The Kindle isn't shiny and can't access porn sites. It can't be eaten and I doubt it can be resold. All it has are books. Therefore, no TSA will be interested in your Kindle.

This is one of my major pet peeves -- I've been told to take it out, I've been told I can leave it in, I've been told that the density of what was in the bag made it an issue (the bag also has Bose headphones, iGo power sources and other misc. items), I've been told I only needed to take out items that had a processor.

This is another one of those training issues -- like shoes in the bin, shoes out of the bin. What's just so irritating is that it's said so definitively - THIS IS THE RULE! - when it's clearly no such thing.

Travelled with my Nook to Germany last month. Didn't need to take it out in the U.S. but in Germany they wanted it out along with my notebook.

Been ok with the Kindle still in the backpack but I usually keep my Kindle between items inside. I have been asked before by the guy behind the machine, "Is there a Kindle or iPad in your bag?" Normally I'll respond there is a Kindle. This happened twice, but in those incidences I was not asked to take the Kindle out or any other further action taken.
