Found someone's photo stick - do you know these people?

Fellow FTers,

I found someone's camera memory stick in NYC recently where it had clearly been "dropped" and I judged it would not be found if the owners came back. My hope is to locate the owners and return their photos. Based on some time zone cues, I believe they are from a country that is on central europe summer time currently.

Do you know someone from europe on vacation that recently lost their photos? If so, are these the people?

I'm removing the joke comment I left; this is serious. Someone lost this property and it should have been given to the police to return.

NYPD Switchboard: 1-646-610-5000

or, if found in a Taxi, 1-212-NEW-YORK (the equivalent of calling 311 from a city phone).

There are people paid to do this work.

Landing gear,

not found in a cab, so it sounds like PD is the right place. I honestly did not think that the PD would be a known clearinghouse that a foreign visitor would think to contact. I can easily send the card to the NYPD if that's the right way to go. My only interest is here is that the couple involved (guests to the US, as I see it) not lose out on their photos. I know if i was on a transoceanic vaction and lost a few days worth of memories, I'd be bummed. My fear with any lost and found that isn't extremely site specific is that it would just disappear into a black hole, with no way for the owners to think to check that particular l&f.

erik123: I can't ID a hotel, but I did ID that they took the "World Yacht" dinner cruise. I tried to call the world yacht but they never answered. I emailed a query to all of the email addresses I could find on their website and have heard nothing back.

I've never ever even glanced at the NYC thread, but this title caught my eye and I couldn't resist. I know its not funny to the person who lost the stick but it made for a great thread title. Thx for the chuckle...

I hope that you do NOT hand it over to the NYPD or the taxi commission. I have never, ever been able to get anything back that has been left in a taxi despite calling, going to the appropriate precincts, etc. I don't think they either care or have the manpower to deal with what they determine are very minor issues.

I think that what you're doing is certainly a better way to try and proceed. You're obviously a good person. Hope you are able to find them!

I'd call the CEO of Word Yacht - could be some great PR in it for them. I recall reading a story in the New York Times about a guy finding a memory stick and locating the owner in the UK (through identifying and visiting the hotel).

Think about this. Who is a foreign visitor most likely to ask about where to look for lost property? I would say a police officer.

Yes, indeed, not only is this the "right way to go," it's also the way the law
prescribes:

Here is part of the New York State Personal Property Law provision on the finding of lost property:

§ 252. Found property and found instruments to be deposited with
police; penalty for failure to deliver to police; delivery to persons in
possession of premises where found. 1. Except as provided in subdivision
five of section two hundred fifty-six of this chapter or as otherwise
prescribed pursuant to section two hundred fifty of the general
municipal law, any person who finds lost property of the value of twenty
dollars or more or comes into possession of property of the value of
twenty dollars or more with knowledge that it is lost property or found
property shall, within ten days after the finding or acquisition of
possession thereof, either return it to the owner or report such finding
or acquisition of possession and deposit such property in a police
station or police headquarters of the city where the finding occurred or
possession was acquired
. . .
[You can look this up at http://public.leginfo.state.ny.us/me...MMONQUERY=LAWS but unfortunately, I cannot directly link the section here.]

Whew, I think I am safe from accidentally becoming a felon! The memory card is worth no more than $10, tops. It's a 512MB card of some no name brand. There's no harm in me sending the card itself to the NYPD, though, so I probably will. If I locate the owners, I can deliver the data or a new card to them, whatever....

found photos

Just out of curiosity have you checked out the properties of the pictures. If you right click on the picture then go to properties there can be a lot of info, depending on the type of camera and the user's settings. Also, here is another website for lost photo's. http://photosdie.typepad.com/lostandfoundphotos

Craigslist.com has many postings looking for lost photos. I hope you find them. It's nice to know that you are taking the time to do this many people wouldn't bother.
