UA, AC, LH: NYC-DUS, $738, mid-summer travel
United, Air Canada and Lufthansa are offering pretty good fares from New York to Dusseldorf. Apparently the summer is wide open for these fares, which I think start at $705 for Air Canada and $738 on United. I don't think you get full Star Alliance mileage credit on Air Canada, but I will leave this to you experts.
This isn't a milage run. I purchased the trip insurance, which ran my cost up to about $800 per ticket. So the cost per point is about 9.5 cents. But I think this is about as cheap as one can get to Europe for summer travel. Dusseldorf is a reasonable train ride to both Amsterdam and Paris. But the Rhine and Mosel areas are great, laid-back places to visit.
I managed through some miracle to book my wife and son Delta Skymiles 60,000 open jaws, into Paris and out of London a few days ago, but the seats are all gone. My daughter and I are spending a few extra days, and try though I might I could not find any more low-point tickets. So I just figured at these prices I'm better off buying.
I still have to make my own way to New York, but I have a companion ticket for my daughter, so the cost shouldn't be too bad. Hope this info is helpful and that I am not repeating.
