After asking and being told it's not possible, it looks like it is so I figured I'd cross-post here just for informational reasons:
The room I wanted to book on marriott.com wasn't available, but it WAS available on hotels.com. So I made a reservation on marriott.com for the next-higher room category and put in an LNF for the unavailable room. LNF was approved today, my romo was "downgraded" to the evidently-still-available room category.
Property: Courtyard Tokyo Ginza Hotel
Reservation on Marriott.com: 242USD (lowest room rate/category available)
3rd party price: 126USD (lowest room available, which was a room category NOT available on marriott.com)
Approved LNF rate: 96USD

A friend of mine tried and was rejected and couldn't be bothered to try nymore so he just booked on the third party site. When he got there, they gave him the 'better' room cos he's an Elite Gold.
Tried booking for another friend and matched it with a rate for 2 pax but somehow, the person doing the comparison looked at the rate for the smaller room and they got a pretty damn good deal.
Unfortunately, this hotel is much older than its sister hotel although still serviceable.

My first LNF claim is a success! I got bored last night and read some LNF threads so I decided to try it out for my upcoming trip to Istanbul.
Marriott hotel name: Ritz-Carlton Istanbul

They said that they could not find the rate that I found which is approx 137 EUR but they found something lower (maybe relative to the one that I booked). I checked the site again and the one that I claimed was a non-refundable rate so they got the refundable rate which is still cheaper than the one in Marriott. It's good that they didn't reject my claim and proactively processed my claim with the other rate.
