Also very disappointed in yet more European venues opening for Aman, that nobody will ever visit. Has anyone outside of Europe even heard of Portugal? Surely there must be better places in Europe to build, such as Venice, Rome, London, Prague, Barcelona, St Petersburg etc.

stunning Raja Ampat!
hmm I quite don't understand why Aman missed attention of this very potential yet special place. My uncle went there couple of years ago, stayed at Misool Eco Resort (non-luxury, yet not basic), and he said Raja Ampat has the richest and healthiest underwater life on this planet! He even didn't understand how he (as an Indonesian) could miss that place (belive me, he dove a LOT!).
If you really love diving, you will easily fall in love in Raja Ampat. If you love to see "Koh Phi-Phi-like" blue lagoon, you will love it either. If you love "Maldives-like" beaches, Raja Ampat is the right place!! Raja Ampat is a real treasure!
I hope Aman would consider to build at least one resort in this area.

* owner of papua diving may be altruistic, but that doesnt address >
- whether govt would have allowed a different business direction
- whether he owns any of the land

** same thing with misool eco resort (MER) - "village from which we've leased our island"
(reminds me of ratua - "100% of its profits will be donated to surrounding island communities")
OTOH i guess we also have to see what happens with aman gabon

For those who enjoy diving, in Raja Ampat you can find convenient resorts at Batbitim, Misool (Misool Eco Resort**), and excellent bungalows and charming traditional huts at Cape Kri, Manswar Island (Papua Diving*).
Others choice available to you are inns at Saonek and Wailebet, Batanta, and, currently being developed by the local government, cottages in Waisai, Waiwo and Yenwauwpnor. Namely ACROPORA Cottage and Restaurant...
From many of these accommodation, it's only a 5 to 15 minutes boat ride to your chosen dive or snorkel site...
Currently the Raja Ampat Tourism are also preparing 5 major Tourism Villages that will be introduced as part of its efforts to preserve the nature and local cultural life which also can be used as the choices of on land excursions for non divers or in between the dives itself. Each Tourism villages will be designed according to its unique and will be equipped by accommodation. It is also hoped that by these Tourism Villages, the society can be self reliance in earning their living while preserving their ancestors inheritance.

its been mentioned that YTL owns surin/chedi phuket, but just noticed this >
Amanresorts Sdn. Bhd. Malaysia
2011 - 57.90% - Property development [active?]
2010 - 60.87% - Dormant
2009 - 61.15% - Dormant
2008 - 61.12% - Dormant
2007 - 52.88% - Dormant
2006 - 56.36% - Dormant
2005 - 58.10% - [?]
[year - equity - status]
2008 - Amanpuri Villa 13 Leasehold (expires 2023) 4,391,000 MYR acquired july 1 1994
2007 - Amanpuri Villa 13 Leasehold (expires 2023) 5,375,000 MYR acquired july 1 1994
just using current exchange rate (not accurate) thats only $1.79MM and $1.46MM
does leasehold expiration seems odd? 1988-2023 = 35 years
