New and rumored Amanresorts / GHM Hotels - the 2012 thread

Amanresorts and any other hotels around the legacy of Adrian Zecha are the benchmark of luxury as discussed in the Luxury Hotels forum. So one of the most interesting themes here is speculating about new Amanresorts and new GHM Hotels. On this threadstarter, I collect all your news, rumors and contributions, keeping the list constantly up-to-date.

***For discussions about existing Amanresorts please use the http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/luxur...manjunkie.html-thread.***

NEW AMANRESORTS - WITH PHYSICAL EVIDENCE:

- Aman in Lijiang, north western Yunnan Province, according to amanforever starting construction mid 2010, also quoted on Forbes (found by travel4vitality): http://onforb.es/m7WoLz. Lijiangs Old Town is Unesco World Heritage, with the largest number of timber houses still in their original Naxi village setting. Opening 2013 according to AmanJunkies (Gallivanters reports about April 2013), with mock-up and panorama-pictures on page 3 of this thread..

- Aman in Venice, Italy, at Palazzo Papadopoli (http://tinyurl.com/3yqhmbl), which is in San Polo and has only a way too small garden, not far from the tourist-overflowed Rialto Bridge. Opening late 2013 according to Gallivanter's, with Amanwella-GM Oivia Richli as opening manager.

- Amanoca close to Angra dos Reis, 2,5 hours from Rio de Janeiro. JM Gathy from Denniston will be designing. Only 20 room resort plus private villas for sale, on 70 acres of land including beach and marina. http://www.atlasholdingsintl.com/projects/brazil.php
First spotted by Air Junkie. Opening late 2013/early 2014 according to GK1998. Cheesy non-Aman website: http://amanoca.com/

- Amanduna in Comporta, Portugal (a natural reserve 1 hour from Lisboa), opening possibly in 2013. Sadly no ocean views. Next to Park Hyatt etc.: http://alcacergolf.com/Location/StrategicContext/ and http://www.herdadedacomporta.pt/en/tourism/amanduna/.

- Aman Vinh Hy in Vietnam, found by Hubertus on architects website: http://www.denniston.com.my/webpagev...manvinhhy.html Gallivanter's speculating about a 2013 opening, with links to location http://www.phongphua.com/images/tintuc/DSC04303.jpg and villa-pool-mockup http://www.phongphua.com/images/tintuc/DSC04319.jpg
Also found these construction fotos: http://peterminhle.wordpress.com/

AMAN - SOUNDS REAL:

- Aman Tokyo in Otemachi district, scheduled for 2014 according to vuittonsofstyle. paul2 found the following Bloomberg-quote: "Slated for completion in 2014, the building will be located on the headquarters site of the former Fuji Bank. It will feature six below-ground and 38 above-ground floors."

6 (!) Amanresorts in Gabon, West Africa:

- "Several" new Amanresorts in Sri Lanka, including Colombo and Anuradhapura: http://www.news.lk/news/business/326...s-in-sri-lanka

AMAN - SPECULATIVE/VAPORWARE

- Amankea (http://www.dolphinci.com/#kea-resort) on spectacular Kea Island in Greece (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kea_(island)) 60 kilometers southeast of Athens - designed by FS-Sayan-Spaceship-Architect John Heah, found first by Ericka. It received approvals, but no decision yet for progress of construction.

2 Amanresorts in Jordan:
- Aman Dibeen, which is close to Jerash, "an amazing Roman city" according to vuittonsofstyle, opening in "an ecologically sensitive forested site", managed by John Vasatka & Tania Rydon who already left Amanyara for it, according to paul2. Then rumored to be delayed due to problems, now back on development according to Gallivanter's.
- Aman at Wadi Rum Desert, check and scroll down http://www.jdc.jo/en/node/33 (found by paul2)

The building is at the opposite end of the town from the ocean, abutting the woods." Also mentioned by Zecha in http://goo.gl/qyx1U.

2 Amanresorts in Morocco:
- Aman in Essaouira - Gallivanter is twittering about Aman buying a Riad & connecting house in the costal town of Essaouira. Very good - since it would be great having an Aman Beach Resort connecting with Amanjena in Marrakech.
- Aman in the Morocco's Mountains - Gallivanter is reporting, that they are also looking for a property in the mountains.

2 more Amanresorts in China:
- Aman in Diqin area northwest of Zhongdian, Yunnan Province, China, coming closer according to bearbrick (http://www.businesswire.com/news/hom...-Kipling-Clark) (both places not too far from each other)
- Aman in Dali, also Yunnan Province in Burma direction - a city, famous for marble and a huge lake. First mentonied by Gallivanter's Guide.

3 more Amanresorts in Brazil, according to paul2, starting with:
- Aman at Alagoas, a spectacular site on the north east of Brazil, mentonied by paul2. Actual status: postponed.
- Aman at the Amazon. Told by Zecha in interview in 2008 (found by Kagehitokiri). Status: Pre-development.
- Aman at Pantanal (first mentioned by paul2). Status: Pre-development.

2 Amanresorts in Australia:
- Aman in Perth, Western Australia. Aman is "in talks" to convert The Old Treasury Buildings, a heritage site, and add a slim tower to the back of the building - to get an Aman Hotel with 90 rooms. Not date set yet. Found by Kagehitokiri/paul2/Gallivanter. Planned Opening 2014.http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news...-1225937869685.
- Aman Sidney at Goldfields House project on Circular Quay, with Kerry Hill as architect. Aman is "mooted" for it, according to Gallivanter's twittering.

3 potential Amanresorts in Malaysia:
- Amancrag atop of Penang Hill (800 meters) at Penang Island, Malaysia. Spotted first by south_sea99, it will be the conversion of an old colonial hotel into a 20 villa Amanresort, most likely with quite spectacular bungalow design. See http://my.news.yahoo.com/crag-hotel-...072735999.html and at the end of this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=BE&f...&v=T5ArDgHsRbk. Planned opening in 2014, now some bureaucratic problems...
- Aman at Desaru Coast, not far from Singapore on the south-east - spotted by Kage at http://destinationresorts.com.my/amanvilla.php with very optimistic opening date 2013
- Aman in Pulau Besar, North Malaysia, on the Island of an inland lake (Source: http://biz.thestar.com.my/news/story...0&sec=business) - long time nothing heard.

- Aman Göcek, Turkey (Architect Kerry Hill), rumored to me by an Aman manager, first specified by paul2.

- Aman development in Burma, as reported by Andrew Harper.

- "Aman in Douro Valley" (UNESCO world heritage site, famous for its wine), architect JM Gathy according to GG, but according to vuittonsofstyle Aman pulled out. According to Gallivanter's Guide, there could be another one in Porto by architect Kerry Hill, but this was not confirmed by my Aman-source.

- Aman in Mozambique, East Africa, happening according to Gallivanter's twittering.

- Aman in Tanzania, East Africa, according to kalihikai.

- Aman in South Africa, first called by vuittonsofstyle. kalihikai added, that Aman already bought land and startet development.

- Aman in San Marino, according to this article http://www.sanmarinonotizie.com/?p=36580 found by Trickster10.

- Aman in Cyprus - in or around the formerly legendary and now haunted Verengaria Hotel in the Troodos Mountains, as rumored on flyertalk by namaguide with possible opening date 2013

- Amanmara in Kenya, spotted by Paul2: "If you try to open www.amanmara.com you are brought straight to the main amanresorts website.

- Amanresort at Sukarta, one good hour from Yogyakarta and a little more from Amanjiwo. According to user Sundarma, construction should have begun in spring 2010, so an opening could be expected around 2012 - which seems unlikely to me...

- Amancaya in Norman's Cay, Carribean, "finally got permissions" according to AirJunkie and opxzaw on flyertalk. http://www.bhahotels.com/news-update...resort-project I also found a funny government-permission link including financial details: http://www.thebahamasweekly.com/publ...aham2657.shtml

- Aman in Vancouver, as rumored by Gallivanter's Twittering.

- Dubai Aman near the Airport - "a unique lifestyle resort at DWTC's Dubai Trade Centre District" (http://propdubai.com/news/1091/index.php). Sounds disgusting!

- Aman Palau:
. maybe on the site of a former Nikko Hotel on one of the 250 Palau Islets, 500 miles southeast from the Philippines, opening unknown. According to a finding by Kage, "the project which will begin construction in the second quarter of 2009 will see completion in 14 to 16-month time", which it didn't.
. maybe on Kayangel Island, also in Palau, opening unknown
(First Source for both projects: Gallivanter Guide).

- Aman in Riviera Maya, Mexico, opening unknown (Source: Gallivanter Guide).

- Aman Pearl Island in Panama (part of a huge development project at Pearl Island http://www.pearlisland.com/), found by paul2 at http://deworldwide.com/clients. Gallivanter's twitters, that this one is not likely too much, because this development is too structured.

2 potential Amanresorts in India, reported a long time ago:
- Orissa, reported in 2008 (http://articles.economictimes.indiat...k-7-star-hotel)
- Kerala, reported in 2004 (http://articles.economictimes.indiat...cha-aman-group)

- Aman in Hawaii - paul2 rumors, that ex-Amanusa-GM Monty Brown is developing something there... Interestingly, vincentb89 found recently, that the pointable map on www.amanresorts.com shows a point in Hawaii! But vuittons now said, that Monty retired, so most probably there will only be a GHM in Hawaii.

- Very, very speculative rumors about Amanresorts in Amman (Jordan), St Petersburg, Sicily, Bermuda, Maui, Costa Rica, Kenia, Cuba, Los Angeles and New York on flyertalk.

Some of the those proposed Aman destinations are pathetic. I mean, Johor Bahru? Surely there are dozens of better places in Malaysia to build an Amanresort: Langkawi, Perhentian, Tioman, Cameron Highlands, Pangkor, KL, Penang, Borneo... etc.

I am awaiting an Aman safari resort, and not a half-year resort like Aman-i-khas. Preferrably in or near the Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania. Possibly something near the Mahale Mountains in the west of the country, similar to Greystoke Mahale.

Also very disappointed in yet more European venues opening for Aman, that nobody will ever visit. Has anyone outside of Europe even heard of Portugal? Surely there must be better places in Europe to build, such as Venice, Rome, London, Prague, Barcelona, St Petersburg etc.

Just a big

Is this a joke

Portugal is a beautiful country with huge potential vs. other locations.

And what about Aman Montenegro: has anyone inside of Europe even heard of Montenegro ?

This sounds a little bit like an isolationistic North Korean Government argumentation... ;-)

Joking aside: Portugal is a very beautiful country indeed - and not only the big community of European Amanjunkies is very happy looking forward to the opening of Portugese, Greece and hopefully even more European Amanresorts far from the worn-out tourist tracks!

What a cheesy website! Looks like a scam, but according to WHOIS it seems not to...

GHM also has a professional website, which I prefer to use: www.ghmhotels.com

Also very disappointed in yet more European venues opening for Aman, that nobody will ever visit. Has anyone outside of Europe even heard of Portugal? Surely there must be better places in Europe to build, such as Venice, Rome, London, Prague, Barcelona, St Petersburg etc.

Just a big

Joking aside: Portugal is a very beautiful country indeed - and not only the big community of European Amanjunkies is very happy looking forward to the opening of Portugese, Greece and hopefully even more European Amanresorts far from the worn-out tourist tracks!
Hmm, JB / Tioman - there are better options like the one at the stalled Penang Hill..
Looking forward to Amans in Portugal & Greece .. If anything , help their dire situation which bodes ?? for rest of the world.
BTW, many non- Europeans ( except those who generally don't venture out of their own country & think they are THE only worthwhile place to be at ) have decent sense of geography & the world

Back to Amankila in 2 weeks

Aman should look at the new Anantara resorts opening in 2012, especially the new Xishuangbanna property in Yunnan province, China. All of their new properties are arguably among the best in the Anantara catalogue, whereas I feel Aman has already peaked with not only its beach resorts but also its culture resorts (Sara, Jiwo, Bagh, Kora). The only way forward is to start opening a few safari resorts, which do not need to be closed down for 6 months every year due to monsoons (i-khas).

Great summation, Deer!

Great summation, Deer. Thank you for taking so much time to catalogue all those rumours!

Off to Aman Porto Heli in June...and others in between. Hope 2012 is a really memorable Aman year for us all.^

AmanResorts/GHM Hotels

Slightly off-tangent- my vote for an Aman Resort would be the Hunza Valley of Pakistan!
The place is stunning. Skardu has a very interesting property- not Aman standards but with an incredible setting and history. Hunza would do well with an Aman...

You must be outside of Europe then and your statement just earns pity from all in the know.

Lisbon is one of the hottest capitals in Europe and value for money is unbeatable in this lovely country. People are consistently hospitable and there are sites like the Douro valley with its man made terraces as impressive as the Chinese Wall.

However the tourism in Portugal is not really high end and Aman would have to offer kind of a circuit. There is one struggling R&C luxury property in the Douro valley which is simply out of price for the place. You can get perfect rooms in Portuygal for about EUR 200 which would cost the double in Italy.
