Malta

What is the consensus on the best hotel in Malta?

I've read quite a few old discussions in the forum pointing to different properties, so would be great to know if there is a clear winner in 2016.

Not so sure you´ll find much or even something on the luxury-market. First you have to decide if you only do Malta or also Gozo. On Malta the Xara seems to be for many here the choice. It´s not on the ocean, it´s in Mdina, a beautiful old city. I didn´t stay so far and judging from pictures I´m not to keen about it. I stayed at the Intercontinental years ago and wasn´t impressed. On Gozo (absolutely worth a 2 or 3 night visit) Kempinski San Lawrenz seems to be more or less the only Option. Well run hotel with good comfort.

Thank you. At first glance Xara seemed like the best choice, but underwhelming - read some pretty negative comments on IC and Westin.

Who would have thought! Of all places in Europe, I am surprised they picked Malta for their second property. I wonder what the background is, there.

Edit: it looks like Iniala founder Mark Weingard is based in Malta, hence the company's focus on the island.

campbell gray was well regarded here at one point, they 'lost' 3 hotels during economic crisis

As our flagship hotel, the property will feature 20 contemporary suites and 3 luxury apartments

St. Barbara Bastions.
what it says for iniala - curious to see if it has pool etc
so iniala will have villas, apartments, and hotels

Only because they "lost" same hotels earlier doesn't mean they aren't good anymore as a hotel company, but now Campbell Gray does add new hotels and plans more in the future. That's a good thing. ^

i didnt say that, and everyone lost things during economic crisis

i said "at one point" because le gray discussion may be 7 years old

one aldwych was incredibly well regarded here, no longer campbell gray

i seem to recall founder changing his role at company, but not sure

Sorry. I meant that Campbell Gray does grow again, which is good and yes, nearly everyone might have "lost" hotels during the recent recession, which was/is bad enough IMHO.

One Aldwych might be still a good/favored hotel despite it isn't a Cambell Gray Hotel anymore. Don't know for sure about quality about this particular hotel, but owners I guess are the same while management might be new.

In regards of Campbell Gray himself, I guess he still "steers" his company, but I'm not sure either, but he wants to expand in the future incl. a new brand for "hip/modern mid-scale millennials". Plus, a new Le Gray Hotel/Residences in Amman, Jordan are planned too. We will see what happens and how this plays out.

Overall the "new" Phoenicia under Campel Gray, fully renovated, brought into the 21st century should be exciting and well worth a look/wait/visit when in Malta IMHO.

Cheers & Safe Travels. ^

Phoenicia

unfortunately Phoenicia opening has been delayed again to April. I was recently asked to cancel my reservation in February.
