Lufthansa or Turkish? [LHR-TBS]
Hello all,
I need to plan for a regular series of trips over the next few years from LHR to Tbilisi. I can either travel Lufthansa via Munich or Turkish via Istanbul. Flight schedules are convenient on both airlines.
If you had to decide one airline/transit airport to commit to, would you choose LH/MUN or TA/IST?
Would appreciate all feedback, good and bad.

Having faced the same choice on regular flights to IST, Turkish wins on most metrics (e.g. better food & drinks) but in the end after a few flights on TK I went back to LH where I just felt more comfortable.
My advice: try both. However from LHR, TK is often flying widebodies which I think would offer a more comfortable flight than being crammed in A320 or B737's - so I would go with these as my first choice.

Which class of travel? If Business TK (not TA btw) is definitely better. MUC (not MUN) is a very good airport for transfers. In case of IRROPS I expect LH will handle things far better than TK.

I would transfer any in MUC any day over IST (at least until the new airport is open). On my last couple of flights MUC-IST and MUC-SAW I had really horrible seat pitch so I am trying to avoid TK (I am 6'4"). It has been really painful and a better meal and the CIP lounge cannot make up for the lack of space. Travelling in Business Class might lead to a different answer, but in the back of the bus TK is a pain.
I even read a TR somewhere (not on FT) where someone was traveling CGN TK IST TK NRT and that person said that the seat pitch on the 32x CGN-IST was better than on the longhaul. So much for LON-IST being operated by widebodies.

You don't say which FF program you belong too. As you posted in this forum then I would assume it is miles&more.
But then be aware, that you will get reduced number of status miles (25%) for all TK flights with M&M. If you are doing a lot of flights, this adds up!

Otherwise, I would choose MUC over FRA as a transfer airport. But on TK you will get hot food, and much better food, and a good chance of IFE.

I am not a current member of any FF program - that's the point of this thread. I am trying to figure out whether to commit the next couple of years travel to TK or LH.

I would go for LH if in Eco, due to nicer connection in MUC, but for TK if in business, due to better seat (real business with some likelihood) and great food.

MUC-TBS is operated with regular A320 series aircraft, so 3+h of misery. TK uses better aircraft LHR-IST, but it takes longer to get to TBS (7h55m instead of 6h40). Connecting with 60-70 min in IST is doable, but will clear your coronaries. TK flies 6 times a week to TBS, LH only 3 or 4 times.

My decision won't be based on the FF program, but once I decide to go either TK or LH, I will basically be committed to that airline and therefore their FF program. Hopefully the travel will be business class, which makes the FF program a moot point.

Both are *A, so both earn miles on each other's FF programs. However, you'll need to look carefully at the earning rates - and thresholds for status, if you're after that more than the mileage redemption as I suspect.
