Meilenschnaeppchen may not be much use if the OP has no immediate plan to travel.

Am I doing this unnecessarily?
You're correct, there has to be 1 purchase per month, but there is no minimum value spent, so you could buy a luggage tag for 5€ at the Lufthansa Store (and receive 5 times the points). You'd collect quite a few luggage tags obviously but you'd get to keep your status and miles, which are worth a lot more than 60€ a year.

"Your award miles will not expire after 36 months, but will remain valid for an unlimited time if you meet the following conditions:
  • You have been a Miles & More Credit Card holder for at least 3 months, and
  • Each month you need to make a minimum of one purchase (that is not returned or refunded) which is eligible for miles with your Miles & More Credit Card."

That's what I thought. I just have my internet bill for my home in the US charged directly to it. So it won't help the OP at this point as s/he likely hasn't been using his CC monthly, if s/he still even has it.

Cancelled Miles and More cc's when annual fee came due.
That was over yr ago & 2 yrs ago by now.
If I get it again now:
a. will usage refresh miles expiring 3/31/17?
b. will I be eligible or ineligible for current bonus?
c. is current best bonus 35K or better?
thanks!!

Current offer for the US M&M CC is 50k after 5k spent. AF is not waived.

Getting the CC now should stop the expiry.

While I defer to your superior knowledge of these things, I'm not so sure about the above. If you see point 5 of the link I posted, it says:

- Expired miles cannot be reactivated by using the Miles & More Credit Card.

https://www.miles-and-more.com/onlin...SO=true&size=2

I think that once the miles expiry train has left the station, there is no way to stop it just via credit card usage. It has to be used monthly to avoid miles expiration if that is the sole means of keeping miles active.

If they have expired, but not if you sign up for the card before they expire...

As I said, your knowledge on this is much better than mine and it sounds like you know this to be true. If so, it's a very good avenue to take.

Thanks for link!
Do you (or anyone) happen to know
if getting past Barclay M&M or other
bonuses disqualifies me from getting
bonus again?

I think it may disqualify you as it seems to be for first-time cardmembers. From the application link oliver2002 referenced, it says:
These one-time award miles bonus offers are valid for first-time cardmembers with a new account only. Existing cardmembers and existing accounts are not eligible.

Might be worth asking, though, as, while some cards/banks are once-in-a-lifetime, others may give a second bonus after a cooling off period, although that is usually spelled out in the T&C as 'not having had the same card in the past 24 months' or similar. However in the thread linked above, there are some reports of Barclays giving the bonus more than once. I would say YMMV.

Yes I received bonus twice via (2) previous M&M cc's.

"These one-time award miles bonus offers are valid for first-time cardmembers with a new account only."

Coincidentally, I asked US customer service just now about
exactly this & told am bonus-qualified if new acct., so emphasis
in above statement seems to be on "new account only."
But that statement is "scary" so am going to call again
in several days & read it to cust. serv.
Also shocked to learn one of my old "M&M" cc never cancelled.
So cancelled it to free up more potential credit.
Will wait week or more to apply for new M&M cc = 50K bonus
& refresh of existing Luftan. miles...

But with the condition that the CC has to be open for 3 months and the miles expiring in less than that (Mar 31), with this work?

Your award miles will not expire after 36 months, but will remain valid for an unlimited time if you meet the following conditions:
You have been a Miles & More Credit Card holder for at least 3 months, and...

Any chance of getting this card if based outside the US?

Question M&M miles expiring

I have almost 30,000 Miles and More miles expiring at the end of March. I don't have a need to redeem any time soon and would rather not credit upcoming Star Alliance flights to M&M. What's the easiest way to prevent these miles from expiring? Thank you!
