LAN open jaw restrictions?

I tried to book a LANPASS open jaw, from BCN->LHR and LHR-> JFK and they wouldn't let me because it's not a round trip. I tried three agents, including a supervisor, and the supervisor declined it because it the open jaw doesn't return to the same zone, but couldn't define what a zone is.

Are these legitimate LANPASS rules, or am I just dealing with clueless agents?

I believe these are legitimate rules. Your itinerary is two one-way flights, or a one way itinerary with a stopover. An open jaw generally provides that the non-flown part of the journey is shorter than the flown sectors.
Examples of an valid open jaw might be
BCN/LHR CDG/BCN
or
BCN/SFO SFO/MAD

Had no problems recently with SCL-EZE / GRU-SCL.
But that itinerary was inside South America (a "zone"?) and involved one of their hubs at the beginning and end...

Definitely legitimate rules.

1.14 Open Jaw: when the outbound destination is different to that from which the return flight departs (for example, an outbound journey from Santiago to New York, with the return flight leaving from Los Angeles to Santiago). This is only allowed within the same reward zone (for example: SCL/MAD/BCN/PAR/LON/HKG/SYD/SCL)".

Well, I think LAN means in the example that HKG&SYD are in the same zone at least when travelling from SCL...

you can mess around the LAN award booking engine to get open jaws, but no double open jaws. when there was the volcano eruption in iceland I tried to make an award booking online for JFK-LIM-MAD and it was priced without problems.
unfortunately this does not work with itineraries which include segments flown by other oneworld airlines.

Reviving this thread.

Have folks still been able to use the technique described in post #9 ?
I couldn t get it to work, even when the departing airport in 2nd leg is same region / country as the arriving airport in 1st leg

If not, how do you go about booking OJ these days?
