I've looked at rooms there also, and also noticed limited availability.

Of note, the Montreal Grand Prix is happening the weekend of June 6th and 7th, and you'll be extraordinary lucky to find a room even at the hugely demand-inflated prices, anywhere, even 20 and 30 miles outside the city.

Back to the blackout question. Here are two quotes from the Gold Passport T&Cs:
#3 seems to the the key point, when standard rooms are available at the Hyatt Daily Rate, you should be able to book an award room. Per the next sentence, standard rooms are defined by the hotel. So that's a somewhat opaque aspect of it.

As with all things Hyatt, try the Gold Passport assistance line if any questions, they are generally helpful. And report back, I'm interested to hear what you find out.

Just to add to recent reports-

Had a nice stay here recently. Echo the sentiments about the breakfast being pretty good (if the omelette chef is there, which we did not have a problem with). We had a good amount of fresh fruit, and a nice selection of hot foods including beans which seemed to be kind of prevalent in our recent trip to Canada during breakfast.

Evening lounge spread was pretty good for N America - had a hot soup and a hot item and a good selection of cold nibbles too. Nespresso machine is available for use anytime, as well as soft drinks/water and beer/wine as part of the honor bar as previously mentioned. When we were there, it was pretty empty so there was no problem at all about running out of food so I can't comment on that. The lounge space itself seems big enough, with a back area with computers for use.

We did the self-park downstairs at $20 per night, but it seems that there are no in/out privileges since it isn't technically part of the hotel. They have a reduced rate for the weekends - $10 (not clear if this is for the whole weekend or per day). The outside lot across the street seemed a bit sketchy to us so we didn't go for that, although it's a bit cheaper. I will also mention that the room we originally had was exposed to a very unfortunate view (rubble--- construction zone?) - I requested a room facing the arts complex and it was much nicer.

Staff we encountered were all very good; all in all a good city-center property!

Staying here right now, and noticed this also happened when we checked in; FD agent came out from behind the desk to hand us our cardkeys and thank us for our business. Very nice, simple touch that costs so little but makes such a great impression. Have a standard room, which is nice, though the toilet is one of the small ones, and for some reason the showerhead/lever/spigot are all off-center. Very small issues/oddities, but we're happy with our room (+1 for the TV actually being HD)

Parking-wise, I looked at the two lots across the street. The one directly across from the entrance of the Hyatt valet only has one light shining, but is within the valet's line-of-sight (which doesn't mean much if the valet is elsewhere or too lazy to report a break-in). There's another adjacent one just before the valet entrance that's better lit. On a Friday night, both are virtually empty... I think someone wanting to break in would be shied away from the lack of cover. We ended up using valet only because we weren't paying for it.

Just booked a 4-day stay at this property through the new year. There seems to be an ongoing renovation since the early 2010, but there are still reviews that mentioned the rooms being dated. I tweeted to the concierge and was told that there are no renovation at this property at the moment.I'm not quite sure what to expect of this stay. @.@

Hi, I've got a stay coming up this weekend at the Hyatt Regency in Montreal. I was offered a Regency Club Upgrade for CAD30 a night (about $20). Does anyone have any experience with the breakfast there or anything? I just matched to Platinum, so if you have any experiences with complimentary upgrades I'd appreciate that as well. I tried searching the forums, but didn't see anything so I figured I would ask.

^ Yes, Platinums only get bonus points, not upgrades (normally).

If you are there in the evening and don't have dinner plans the lounge is decent, but its really not a replacement for dinner if you are even slightly hungry. Breakfast is fine, but certainly not spectacular. I believe the cash price for the buffet is $16.

I would say the $30 upgrade is worth it for 2 people, but not for one. Having said that, there are LOTS of better places to eat in Montreal than the HR. I would spend the $30 on beers at Dieu Du Ciel followed by some bagels from Fairmount around the corner (you gotta carb up for Quebec winters).

I generally agree with this assessment. The last time I was there, a couple of years ago, the evening service was pretty nice and for breakfast they combined club members with the general buffet. For some reason, a friend who's Plat received club access also, don't count on it however.

Just arrived and checked into the "suite", which is basically 2 connected rooms. Is this normal for its entry level "suite"? It's weird to have a mirror image of a room, with the only difference being the couch/bed.

Very typical in many hotels and hotel chains, not just Hyatt. I'm just happy when we get a suite that actually has two rooms and not just a larger room they want to call a "junior suite"

Normal for the entry suite at this property, this is what I got the 2x I used a DSU at this property. A friend also got one once.

I'd add this location is very nice during the holiday season, there are multiple things happening at the Place d' Arts (what I saw last week: holiday village with mulled wine, lighted see-saws), you get underground access to the Metro, a grocery store in the complex, walking distance to old city and the core of the downtown.

Elite premium WiFi capped at 4.90 Mbps ($14.95/day if not Diamond/Platinum).

Wifi is also slow and constantly requires you to log back in. Not sure if that's been fixed yet, but it was pretty bad back in May.

For the premium speed, it was one login per 24 hours and connection was stable at the capped 4.90 Mbps.

I really struggle with this hotel. I love Montreal, the location of the HR is great (especially if you will use the metro), and I always need another stay to make Diamond again. However, the rooms are not aging well (they are in desperate need of a major room renovation and have been for quite a while), the FD service has never been particularly friendly or helpful to this Diamond, and restaurant breakfast quality has been going downhill over the past few years.

Come on Hyatt, help me spend more money at the HR Montreal - I really want to.
